The nightmare world is getting even stranger as Becrowned has dropped a new demo on Steam. Developed by 13th Street Studio and published by Top Hat Studios, the game is a surreal, non-linear psychological horror.
It’s industrial ruins-meets-tragic fantasy kingdom
Becrowned is inspired by the surrealist dark satire of VHS-era horror and the lurid atmosphere of classic grindhouse cinema. You play as Richard Torrance, a man who’s built his entire life around getting what he wants. He’s self-willed, powerful, and used to being in control of just about everything.
Despite all his achievements and his domineering personality, there’s still a massive emptiness eating him away. And then, things take a rather unfortunate turn when Richard finds himself caught up in a Faustian bargain.
Now, just like me, if you don’t know what a Faustian bargain is, let me tell you what it means. Also called a deal with the devil, it’s an agreement where someone trades their core moral, spiritual, or ethical values in exchange for power, wealth, knowledge, or fame.
So, back to Mr Richard Torrance. The bargain ends up redefining his past, present, and future, opening the door to a bizarre collection of places that shouldn’t even exist. As Richard gets closer to the happiness he’s been chasing, his obsession with control only gets worse. Yes, it’s quite deep!
The world he’s stuck in is just as strange. It constantly plays around with the contrast between reality and dreams, the past and the future, and ancient and modern settings. There’s a tragic kingdom between medieval fantasy and industrial horror. Enormous iron factories sit alongside crumbling castles, while moss-covered rocky streams lead to gas stations.
