The daily hustle never stops; it seems the whole world lives by this unspoken rule: get up and grind. This lifestyle comes with sacrifices, however—boredom and no time to scratch that hobby itch. I lived this way too, at least I DID, before I got my hands on the brand-spanking-new REDMAGIC 12 Pro.
In this REDMAGIC 12 Pro Review, I’ll cover my time with this phone, stuffing in as much of my own experience as possible, and hopefully recall enough of the techy bits for my more digitally advanced readers who’d rather hear of its raw power and specs. Let’s get into it!
Introducing The REDMAGIC 12 Pro
REDMAGIC hardly need an introduction here on Gamezebo. All of us love their tech, so much so that a close friend of mine has one of their previous model phones, on my recommendation. The (red)magic of these devices lies in their dual purpose.
When it suits, they’re a high-speed performance phone, doing all that you’d want your mobile to do. But, quite literally, with the flip of a switch, it becomes a powerful gaming device, capable of smoothly running mammoth-sized AAA games with no overheating or performance issues.
This brings me back to my earlier point about grindset. I’ve noticed that in the past few years, I find myself more strapped for time than ever. Less time to game in my downtime, and I’d be lucky to have enough battery on my current phone by the day’s end when I can finally sit down and indulge.
It All Comes Full Rectangle
And this is why I’m overjoyed with the REDMAGIC 12 Pro. This device feels like it gives me more hours in the day, so I don’t forget my roots and can always make time for a cheeky gaming sesh. For comparison, I’d be hard-pressed to have my current phone survive a full day of usage on one charge, and not overheat when trying to run something pretty tame like The Battle Cats, or even just use it as a standard mobile phone.
You might argue, Sho, you have a PC and Switch; why not those? To that, dear hypothetical question bearer, I answer: I like being in bed.
In the case of the Switch, they’re heavy and hurt to hold for long periods, and those pesky Joy-Cons always get stick drift. Frankly, I’m sick of replacing them every few months, and I’d rather have a reliable device that does all the Switch does, but more compact for comfort.
And I can play games when travelling, without losing my privacy to onlookers watching me get my pixelated hind handed to me.
But You Playin’ on Your Phone
Alright, I’ve harped on enough about loving being in bed and gaming when commuting to kill the boredom. But what else does this phone do? Aside from the obvious, of course.
One thing I always love about REDMAGIC devices is how futuristic they look. Sleek, timeless designs that always feel a century or two ahead of the current. This genius design process means more screen space for deeper immersion into games, and clearer visuals.
It’s super comfortable to hold as well, and never overheats, so my little digits never awkwardly dance and shuffle across the back of the phone as I readjust my hold or try to find cool spots.
Simple thoughtfulness like this is what makes gaming on the REDMAGIC 12 Pro so fun. I was never once distracted or pulled from my lock-in because of the phone struggling to keep up with me.
I also can’t overstate how impressive the battery life is. Like, 9 hours of constant, fully-framed Wuthering Waves before it died. Ask me how I know that.
We Need To Talk About This…
This wouldn’t be an earnest review without talking about the stuff I wasn’t keen on. Primarily the AI Gaming Assistant. I hate to say it, but I’m tired of trying to escape generative AI, and it finds me no matter what, now even built into the very device I use for escapism.
I don’t like AI; I don’t like how shoehorned it is into our lives, and how destructive it tends to be. The AI-assisted play mode is designed to remove autonomy from games, guiding your progression and actively playing when you’re not around.
Am I crazy for thinking that kind of ruins the purpose of gaming? I like the challenge, and I like knowing I can accomplish it myself, even if it isn’t optimal. I want my phone optimised, not how I play on that phone.
It also feels like a discredit to the developers to have a robot play their game as a human stand-in, when the whole point of this phone is to make gaming on mobile accessible, powerful, and fun. At the start of this review, I was talking about how the grindset has stilted our personal time, and I definitely don’t think an AI playing a game on my behalf fixes that issue. Quite the opposite, actually.
In my opinion, this adds nothing to the device and isn’t a feature for me. I don’t want to be recommended upgrades; I want to come to decisions on my own and make my own builds, scuffed as they are.
The Specs For Nerds!
Righty, with my disdain tucked out of the way, here’s what I know of the specs.
Design Notes
RGB Liquid Cooling: The phone has an intricate and neatly designed cooling system that keeps the phone at safe temperatures without sacrificing aesthetics. Watching the RGB light whip around looks so cool, especially at nighttime. Party in my iggy type vibes.Notably Slimmer Design: I’ve had other REDMAGIC phones, and this one is notably slimmer and more comfortable to hold, with a more rounded body. It just feels great in hand.185Hz Display: Yes! A number that significant CAN be in your mobile phone. With its industry-defining 185Hz Display and G1 Display Control Chip synergy, the phone has the best visuals of any other device, PC, or console I own, and with a neat 30% lower power consumption rate than previous REDMAGIC models.9th-Gen Camera: The camera disappears when not in use, which is, firstly, so cool to watch. But, when you want it, it’s rapid to respond, and takes such high-definition pictures, it quite literally captures a real moment in time, no blurring or smoothing.
Gaming Performance and Experience
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Overall extremely polished resolution and frame generation across multiple games, including all of the games I have in my Steam library!FPS Gaming: Similar to the above, this feature lets you bring AAA Gaming onto a phone, without losing any quality that other devices simply can’t keep up with. Common REDMAGIC W.Iconic Cooling System: To help protect the phone, retain battery life, and keep me in the zone, the REDMAGIC 12 Pro has its latest AquaCore Cooling System 3.0, keeping the phone running and quiet whilst I play.8,400mAh Battery: All packed into a slimmer, lighter body, with rapid wired and wireless charging.
REDMAGIC 12 Pro Game Space
One of the REDMAGIC specials is its Game Space, a hub and shortcut to all games you own, regardless of whether their origins begin on mobile, PC, Steam, etc. It’s an effortless way to get stuck right in, with shorter loading times and responsive commands, including a recording software.
It’s also easy to activate in-game, simply by swiping from the top left or right side of the screen. This lets me browse any plugins and check the game’s performance and its running quality without exiting the game.
There was also the Host Mode, which let me quickly play my PC games by connecting the phone to my monitor. And, whilst already on the PC, I discovered the PC Emulator, which for the REDMAGIC 12 Pro was revamped to add new features, including Steam Workshop support and achievement displays for a more complete experience.
And, when I wanted to, I could even play mobile games on my PC by connecting a mouse and keyboard to the phone. This was a pretty unique experience and one I’m definitely interested in exploring more of.
