Signal Veil is a 90s anime-inspired survival horror that checks pretty much every box you’d expect from one. There’s a haunted school, an old cellphone, and a disturbing secret hiding behind the school’s walls.
Tokyo-based horror publisher Serafini Productions and Chilean indie studio Time Hunters have revealed the third-person survival horror game. It’s in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The teams have dropped the first trailer for Signal Veil. The game brings the tension of classic survival horror such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Meanwhile, the visual style takes inspiration from psychological horror series such as Another and Jujutsu Kaisen. Take a look at it here!
You play as Aki Mizuno in Signal Veil
She’s a teenage girl whose mother disappears without a trace. Her final gift to Aki is an old mobile phone, which has supernatural abilities. It starts vibrating, making strange sounds and showing interference whenever spiritual entities or lingering memories are nearby. Basically, Aki gets the world’s worst Find My Phone feature.
The phone becomes her main way of dealing with whatever is haunting Nishikawa High School. It can detect entities before they properly manifest, identify corrupted areas and reveal clues, hidden objects, imprints and signals that Aki couldn’t see normally. Its flash can also stun spirits, while the camera can expose things hiding in plain sight.
Nishikawa High School has plenty of corridors. Every hallway and facility can hide a threat or secret. Resources are limited, including medicine, ammo, key items, improvised weapons and mystical weapons. Different entities have their own behaviours, so observation, timing, strategy and using the environment properly matter a lot.
The psychological side of Signal Veil seems just as important as the physical danger. The story involves false memories and buried secrets, with Aki gradually confronting things connected to herself.
