Keep Driving is the kind of game that makes you want to disappear for a weekend, get in an old car, and just see where the road takes you. The nostalgic road trip RPG from Y/CJ/Y is now making the trip over to consoles. The indie studio is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and its previous projects include The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, Sea Salt, and Post Void.
So, Keep Driving was launched in February last year on PC. On September 28th, the title will launch on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. On the same day, the devs are adding mod support for the PC version through Steam Workshop.
Keep Driving has a procedurally generated pixel art open world
It’s set in the very early 2000s. You’ve just bought your first car, summer is stretching out in front of you, and you hear about a festival happening on the other side of the country. So, you start the engine, look at the map, pick a route, and go. Whether you actually make it there, and what happens along the way, depends on the choices you make.
During the trip, you’ll pick up hitchhikers, including all kinds of misfits, oddballs, and lost souls. They have their own personalities, stories, and questlines, with a wide variety of unique and fun things to do. Some of those quests can lead to heartfelt emotional payoffs, while others can give you gameplay advantages. You can also take on odd jobs, upgrade your car, customise it, and repair it.
Keep Driving offers a unique turn-based system for dealing with situations on the road. Getting stuck behind a tractor can become a strategic encounter. You use your own skills, upgrades, and items in the glovebox to get through whatever obstacle you’ve run into.
Keep Driving doesn’t make a road trip look glamorous. Instead, it captures what it feels like to be young and have nowhere particularly important to be. You’re in some beat-up car with a little money, some random music playing, and for a few hours you don’t have to think too hard about what comes next.
