A PS5 remake of a cult-favorite 2002 action game has arrived on the PlayStation Store. The remake brings enhanced visuals and modern features to the classic Japanese bullet-hell shooter released more than two decades ago.
Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is now available for PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store. The game comes from Shanghai Alice Reprise, a new studio formed by senior developers and Touhou series creator ZUN to bring older Touhou games to modern platforms.
The game is available in two editions, namely the Standard and Deluxe editions. The standard one costs $17.99, while the latter is on sale for $24.99. As of now, the game holds an average rating of 4.98 on the PS Store.
What can players expect from Touhou Koumakyou?
In the game, players can choose between Reimu, the shrine maiden, and Marisa, the magician, as they attempt to resolve the Scarlet Mist Incident threatening Gensokyo. The shoot ’em up gameplay requires players to dodge enemy attacks while defeating enemies across various levels in the game.
Both the standard and deluxe editions come with two versions of the game. New Classic is the modern remake of the original game, featuring high-resolution visuals and newly arranged BGM tracks by the programmer and composer Zun. It also includes a new mode with unlimited lives, making it beginner-friendly for newbies. The remake also includes a visible boss-location indicator and a clearly displayed player hitbox.
Meanwhile, the Classic version is not a remake. It is a faithful recreation of the original game, preserving its original gameplay and presentation. This version is included with the release, but all of its text is in Japanese.
The Standard edition comes with these two versions. The Deluxe edition also includes an additional app that gives players access to more than 30 tracks from both versions. The two game versions are available only as a bundle and cannot be purchased separately.
