If you’re into visual novels, After the Wane is probably worth keeping an eye on. Nova-box, the indie French studio behind Independent Games Festival narrative finalists Seers Isle and Across the Grooves, has dropped a new release date trailer for the title.
After the Wane is launching on November 10th, 2026. It’ll be coming to PC, Mac, and Linux through Steam and GOG, while the Nintendo Switch version is currently planned for early 2027. The game is a combination of contemporary dance, watercolour art, family mysteries, romance drama, and urban occultism.
The highlight of After the Wane is its art
The game contains more than 2,000 individually hand-drawn animation frames created using traditional rotoscopy. Meanwhile, the dance sequences were developed through close collaborations with professional choreographers and dance companies.
Several dance scenes will appear throughout the story, and all of them are animated by hand using rotoscoping. The backgrounds are also hand-painted watercolours, with hundreds of individual images created for the game by Art Director Nicolas Fouqué.
The soundtrack features orchestral music specially composed and recorded by the music collective Illustrason. It adapts and shifts depending on the choices you make and the mood of each scene. The new trailer shows off visuals with authentic contemporary dance choreography. Take a look!
What’s the story?
After the Wane follows Lena, a young dancer who heads to Paris hoping to follow in the footsteps of a mother she never really knew. Her mother was also a dancer, but she abandoned Lena when she was a child. As soon as Lena sets foot in contemporary Paris, she finds herself stuck right in the middle of a lifelong and increasingly bitter conflict within the city’s dance scene.
On one side, there’s Fernand, the elusive director of an open community centre where young dancers can gather and create together. On the other, there’s Deborah, who leads a strange, secretive, demanding, and exclusive theatre troupe. Lena ends up caught between the two worlds.
Lena’s problems aren’t limited to dance politics solely. She’s also dealing with love, heartbreak, multiple potential suitors, and the general emotional chaos of young adulthood. And there’s also a cynical uninvited voice hanging around in her mind to make everything even more uncomfortable.
After the Wane has multiple story paths and endings. Your choices determine where Lena’s story goes and what eventually happens to her. So, do give it a try once it drops!
