Narrative CRPG Travelling At Night Launches a Steam Demo

Developer and publisher Weather Factory has dropped a demo on Steam for their upcoming title Travelling At Night. The studio’s previous releases include Cultist Simulator, Book of Hours, Sunless Sea, and Fallen London.

Travelling At Night is a combat-free CRPG, depicting an alternate version of post-war Europe. What’s interesting is that the game mixes a lot of elements into it. There are eldritch parasites, Cold War politics, opera, amber, snow, and whatnot!

It’s about choices rather than combat

It takes place in Europe in 1948. The place has been absolutely wrecked by the War in the World and the War in the Sun, leaving behind myth-scarred ruins and night-sky abysses. Meanwhile, the golden Incorporates of the USA are locked in a Cold War with the star-touched Ministries of the USSR.

Twelve years ago, during a brutal winter in Cracow, you were hollowed out by the Worms, eldritch parasitic creatures that came from under the world. That whole nightmare forced you to leave. Now you’re back, but your past hasn’t exactly decided to leave you alone.

There’s no combat. At all. After six years of war, the game figures there’s been enough fighting already. But there are plenty of other ways to die, and there are things worse than death. It might remind you of Planescape: Torment or some of the stranger narrative-heavy adventure RPGs.

The demo covers the Introduction chapter. You’ll be able to pick different backgrounds and skills for your character, explore a newly populated Antibes, and visit its Sanitarium Aujourd’hui. You can talk to the people living there before the journey that kicks off Travelling At Night properly begins.

You can choose what kind of person you want to be, too. Be an exorcist driven by Sorrow. Or a stage magician trying to feed your Appetite. There are sixteen different skills you can use to build your character, including things like Curiosity, Dignity and Spivvery (it’s what you need when getting a hot meal in a freezing world becomes a problem).
