Danchi Days is a cosy slice-of-life adventure title that also makes you laugh. Actually, it’s comedic yet bittersweet. As the title suggests, it takes place in a danchi, a Japanese mass housing complex. It’s a collaborative project by multiple developers and publishers.
The development team is made up of sandy powder, Melos Han-Tani, mogumu, and gingham games, while Analgesic Productions is publishing the game. Melos Han-Tani, who previously worked on Anodyne 1 and 2, Even the Ocean, Sephonie, and Angeline Era, handles the programming, music, game design, and English translation. sandy powder writes the story in Japanese and also co-designs the game, while mogumu is the one behind the artwork.
Danchi Days is inspired by the devs’ real-life experiences in Japanese apartment blocks and explores the realities of family dementia. Its 16-bit pixel art style heavily emulates the colourful, quirky aesthetic of Game Boy Advance classics like Sakura Momoko’s Uki-Uki Carnival. Take a look at it below!
The game follows 12-year-old Hoshino Kanaoka, who moves back to her hometown in Japan to live with her grandma, Kimiko Kanaoka. Grandma has been living with dementia for the past few years. Kimiko used to be the principal of a kindergarten and was also the person who organised the local summer festival.
Seeing her grandma in this condition makes Hoshino sad. So, she decides she’s going to bring the festival back by getting the neighbourhood together again. But not everyone is excited to see the festival to return, so you’ll also have to deal with people standing against the idea.
Danchi Days is about the people living there
You meet neighbours from all kinds of backgrounds. There are friendly seniors who love chatting, grumpy high schoolers who just want to leave, and adults trying to make it through everyday life. Then there’s the in-game internet, which lets you browse websites to learn more about your neighbours.
Danchi Days launches on October 29th, 2026, on Steam with Steam Deck support. There will be a 10% launch discount on the full price of $14.99. You can check out the demo on Steam now. It covers Chapter 1 and lasts around 90 minutes.
