Whatever you do, at (20,000, 20,000), do not drink the potion of water breathing…
Published August 3rd, 2026, after the conclusion of SFAWTDE, Wifies released The Search For The Leviathan. This movie-length spectacle exists as a standalone documentary with Wifies as the acclaimed narrator and main character. But if you’re here, I imagine you already know this…
Wifies has a knack for weaving intricate themes of deep mythology and eldritch lore into what is, at its core, a simple voxel sandbox game. And, considering the first SFAWTDE video absolutely blew my mind alongside the fandom theories surrounding Derlord, Avery, and The King in Yellow, I knew The Search For The Leviathan was deeper than face value after my first watch. Drowning, even.
I want to talk about some interesting things I noticed during The Search For The Leviathan video to hopefully curate a satisfactory theory for you, dear reader.
Beyond this point, I will indulge in spoilers. If you haven’t seen the source material, I suggest watching it via YouTube.
The Search For The Leviathan Theory
One of the most popular theories for The Search For The Leviathan, and one that I believe and will focus on, is that Hummer IS the Leviathan, at least metaphorically.
A Siren’s Call
Throughout the movie, Hummer repeatedly tests Wifies, from the initial Reddit post hoax to the three drowning trials to meet “Levi”. I’m going to present to you the answer first, and explain second.
Hummer is the Leviathan, searching for someone to believe in him. (Potentially to not be forgotten about when the deep ocean bug is inevitably patched.)
The Trials
First, the Trials. At Hummer’s boat during the initial meeting between Wifies and Hummer, Hummer tricks Wifies into drowning. However, Wifies doesn’t encounter Levi here because, as Hummer later explains (and I’m paraphrasing), Levi wants people to believe in him: no potions, hardcore game mode, rewarding only those who truly believe both within the game and outside of it.
In Hummer’s world, the game is set to normal, meaning Wifies respawns. Additionally, as he began drowning, he swam upwards, not trusting that he wouldn’t drown and wanting to self-preserve. These two factors prevented Wifies from encountering Levi in this world.
Keen eyes will have also noticed the 0/3 entity count during Wifies’ plunge, which is what caused him to retreat into the reeds. For a moment he believed in Levi, but gave up on this ideology as he began drowning.
Another note is that at 22:34 of the video, Hummer says “See you down there.” when sending Wifies down into the ocean, despite remaining above sea level the entire time. Misspoken or not, this seems like an admission that he is Levi.
Arronax Server Trial
Aside from the museum itself and voice memos left by Arronax, this server was interesting. We learn Arronax has a secret hideout at (-20,000, -20,000), the complete opposite end of the world, where another super deep ocean exists, alongside a failed ocean elevator that appeared to have been blown up. (I’ll come back to this).
During this trial, Wifies stashes a secret water-breathing potion, though he doesn’t use it and drowns. Being a hardcore server, he lost access to the world and its archive, so is understandably quite upset when he and Hummer talk back on his server after their exploration.
Hummer then states that just holding the potion in his inventory, even with no desire to use it, means that his trust in Levi is not as ironclad as Wifies says, which is why they drowned.
“But thats why it didn’t work. What did I say? You have to believe. Levi won’t come out if you don’t believe. If you could’ve saved yourself, it means you’re holding back.” – Hummer.
Arronax and Hummer Trials – A Tangent
Let me quickly detour, as I want to say more about this server.
Backtracking a little, Hummer seems uncomfortable and awkward during the tour of Arronax’s Museum, which I think is due to Arronax’s definitive conclusion on Levi being nothing more than a bug in the game. This information being passed onto visitors as concrete evidence means fewer people believe in the Leviathan, and are more interested in visiting the empty, anomalous deep oceans.
One of the only machines Hummer seems interested in showing Wifies is the working elevator at (20,000, 20,000), which safely shows them the ocean depths. He knew where this was because he had been on this server before.
But, out at (-20,000, -20,000), there lay another in ruin, though blown up. Which we later see Hummer do in the Leviathan Server during the final trial. Now, my question is: Was Arronax close to discovering Levi and gave up at the final hurdle, which is why Hummer is saddened by the server’s dismissal?
After all, the lighthouse stored plenty of potions of water breathing, meaning whoever decommissioned the elevator within the ocean to prove their trust in Levi still failed for the same reason Wifies did.
If Hummer IS the Leviathan, having so much misinformation about himself in a popular server dedicated to his dismissal would validate why he’s so uncomfortable being in this server to begin with.
Alternative Ending
Alternatively, Hummer tried this same experiment with Arronax, but it failed for the same reasons as listed above, and he is ashamed. Though this has a few plot holes since Hummer didn’t know about this secret base location.
Leviathan Server
Finally, the Leviathan Server. At (20,00, 20,000) is a village on the coast of the deep ocean. After a scuffle with Para, Hummer and Wifies build a submarine, which has a similar mechanic to the elevators on Arronax’s server. (Coincidence, or not?)
Before blowing it up, Wifies and Hummer talk, and Hummer has some interesting dialogue.
“Why do you care so much?” – Wifies
“Because I want to see Levi” – Hummer
“What do you care if I care?” – Wifies
“Because I want you to see it too.” – Hummer
(cut some dialogue)
“I don’t know if I can believe in something that doesn’t exist.” – Wifies
“Then believe in me.” – Hummer
Sweet as this conversation is, this entire movie thus far has explicitly made Levi the focus of belief. For players to encounter him, they must believe in Levi. So, why does believing in Hummer allow Wifies to visit a place described in one of the Reddit passages from the start of the movie? Why does Wifies encounter Levi after believing in Hummer?
Wifies Believes in Hummer
This entire journey, one thing was rather obvious that I’ve yet to mention. Hummer is strange. When Wifies first joins his server, he opens the tab list to find he is online alone, only for Hummer to randomly appear with no login message.
Similarly, when Para confronts Wifies and Hummer stealing from his base, he accuses only Wifies, never addressing Hummer, as though he isn’t there. That, and he questioned Wifies when he says:
“We’ll be gone for 30 minutes max, we will bring everything right back to you.” – Wifies
What are you talking about? What do you mean we’ll bring it back?” – Para
In this clip, Para is hung up on Wifies, saying we. He isn’t confused about the proposal of someone borrowing and returning blocks.
Once again, I remind you, Wifies believing in Hummer, a player nobody else seems to notice, is what made him encounter the Leviathan.
Hummers Death
During the third trial before Hummer blows up the submarine, Wifies passes him his only potion of water breathing. Hummer tosses this out, but it re-enters his inventory almost immediately. Whether he knew this or not, this is what undoubtedly caused Hummer to die.
Though, after Wifies encounters Levi and “wakes up”, he rejoins Hummer’s server only to find himself alone. He then emails Hummer, though this concludes the video, so we get no response.
Believing in the Hummer Leviathan theory, this can be explained as Hummer finally showing his true self to Wifies, and now Wifies knows of the Leviathan; he can continue the chain of introducing new players to Levi so that this “bug” may never die out.
Think of how, for many years, Minecraft would throw in a – Removed Herobrine in the update logs. I think this story is portraying something similar, but with a mythological legend of the sea.
A Siren’s Call – Part 2
Revisiting my earlier heading, I want to talk about Hummer’s name.
To hum is to sing. A siren’s call, as proclaimed by seafarers, is the voice of a temptress that drags you down into the depths to drown unlucky sailors. In the entire video, Hummer repeatedly uses his words to get Wifies into the depths, though I don’t think he intends to drown Wifies, unlike that of a Siren.
Kaliedascope
“I was swimming in my Minecraft world, when all of a sudden the ocean opened up beneath me, swallowing me whole. At that moment, I was sent to the understandable, an ethereal plane flanked by golden foliage and an endless sky. A world once inhabited, not abandoned. The Leviathan is real.”
After Wifies is swallowed by the ocean in the Leviathan Server, he enters a place much like the one described by one of the forum posts at the start of his video. Though before reaching this plane, he falls through a kaleidoscope, which is symbolic of shifting perspectives.
The Images and The Heart
Whilst wandering around the ethereal plane, Wifies takes screenshots, which we later discover to appear exactly like those from the forum posts. Empty vast seas, no monsters, no golden foliage, no sky. To me, this immediately proves that the other forum posts had credibility, and they had seen it too. They had also encountered Hummer, the Leviathan.
Also, within the grand palace of the ethereal plane lay a chest with a sole heart of the sea inside. I believe this is symbolic of the heart of the Leviathan, and Levi (Hummer) showing Wifies its heart. They now both trust one another wholly after these trials.
Anagrams
Finally, I want to mention anagrams. Hummer exclusively calls The Leviathan Levi, a pretty casual ilk considering the reputation of such a mythological beast.
Anagrams of Levi include Live and Evil. In mythology, the Leviathan is seen as an evil creature, so the contrast of a heaven-adjacent realm representing its heart is perfect for the themes of believing in Levi as a conceptual being.
Conclusion…
To conclude this ramble, I think the story is trying to show us the contrast between logic and belief. You and I know that entities like the Leviathan and Herobrine do not possess physical bodies, at least in the vanilla code. But the vastness of Minecraft, the depth of its buggy oceans, makes it fun to speculate, and sometimes lines do blur, and logic stops being so straightforward.
Hummer embodied the Leviathan. Maybe not in a physical sense, but definitely emotionally. He wanted someone to believe in his belief, which Wifies continually pushed against as the logical contrast. Wifies recognised he was a player in a game, whereas Hummer seemed much more enveloped by his fantasy.
This is what caused Hummer to become the Leviathan. Again, I don’t mean he is physically the Levi, nor a buggy game code. But when Wifies instilled his belief in Hummer, and not the Leviathan, he finally found it. A spectacle that only those willing to look beyond the coding of the game can recognise. This is what Hummer was trying to say the whole time.
I like to think that Hummer is Levi. It makes the story feel so much more involved and metaphorically elusive and beautiful when rewatching it with that hindsight. You’re free to disagree; this is mere fanfiction after all.
