Rhythm Doggo has opened its Steam Playtest to everyone. This is the second playtest, after the first one kicked off on June 15th, but it was only for a limited number of people. As for the full release, it’s planned for PC in 2027.
The game comes from Swedish developer Nicklas Nygren, aka Nifflas, and publisher 505 Pulse. Nifflas has been making weird, creative platformers for years, including Knytt Stories and Ynglet. Rhythm Doggo is no different.
Rhythm Doggo is not a usual platformer. Hear me out. The setup is wonderfully goofy, and the world reacts to everything you do. It mixes exploration with rhythm mechanics. Music is the engine driving movement, puzzles, and exploration.
You sat down to play a video game, but got transformed into a dog. So, you need to figure out how to get back to being human. In the meantime, you’re just out there being a very good pup, running around, jumping through levels, sniffing everything, helping other dogs, and making music with every move you make.
The gameplay feeds the beat, and the beat feeds right back into the gameplay. Every jump, movement, and action helps shape the soundtrack around you. The devs call it a living soundtrack because it evolves in real time depending on what you’re doing.
For the visuals, Rhythm Doggo uses cellular automation to create effects where pixels move around and evolve in unpredictable ways. According to Nifflas, the system is basically an expanded version of Weighted Conway, which itself is based on Conway’s Game of Life.
So, what’s Rhythm Doggo offering in this playtest?
There are six playable worlds featuring colourful towns. There, you can meet other dogs, pick up quests, discover alternative paths, and stumble into unique surprise encounters. Also, there are three different biomes, each bringing their own visuals, music, and gameplay mechanics.
