1997 RELOADED: Or, Whatever Happened to Andy Quinn? is bringing the alternate-history music scenes from that era. A visual novel, which the developer Gaigo Studio, calls a cinematic enhanced comic, it’s out now on Steam and itch.io.

The title is a kinetic experience that has the feel of a prestige graphic novel with an emotional investigative story. Visually, it has a neo-retro aesthetic. The more than 2,000 original illustrations combine detailed research into the 1990s with a modern directorial style.

The highlight is a soundtrack which is full of lost hits. The soundtrack consists of original Pop and Alt-Rock tracks that feel like rediscovered relics from another timeline. Fictional artists who exist within the game’s lore perform these songs, letting you hear music from the same musicians you encounter throughout the story.

The soundtrack for 1997 RELOADED was produced at Gaigo Studio in Genoa and features artists like Jessie Wagner, Ken Gordon, and Rosa Helena. Wagner’s credits include work with Lenny Kravitz, Chic, Kid Rock, Stevie Van Zandt, and Duran Duran.

What’s the story in 1997 RELOADED: Or, Whatever Happened to Andy Quinn?

The story kicks off in Hove, England, in June 2023. Two Italian best friends, Marco and Federico, are both sixteen years old and stuck away from home while attending an intensive English summer course. Hanging out with them is Shirley, the determined pink-haired daughter of Marco’s host family.

One day, the trio discovers an old answering machine at a local flea market. Hidden inside is a haunting recording from 1997. Their search for answers takes them from the grey coasts of Europe to the neon-lit nights of New York City and eventually Los Angeles.

Along the way, they dig deep into the music world of the 1990s, uncovering secrets related to fame, morality, and long-forgotten events. They get to experience Roxyverse, an alternate version of the 1990s where Grunge never happened, and LA remained the centre of the global Alt-Rock scene.
