A Storied Life: Tabitha is now out on PC and Nintendo Switch. It’s a casual indie release from developer Lab42 and publisher Secret Mode. The game is inspired by other cosy puzzlers like Unpacking and A Little to the Left, and even classic word games like Mad Libs.

The project started as an idea from writer Cherish Goldstraw, who brought it to studio director Terry Goodwin. The two developed it within Lab42 Games before taking it to Secret Mode, which has previously worked with the studio on ports for games like A Little to the Left and Wobbledogs.

A Storied Life: Tabitha has a charming watercolour style and an unusual narrative

The game has a painterly look, with 17 hand-painted levels supported by subtle animation, changing weather, and time of day effects. The setting sticks closely to an authentic Yorkshire backdrop. Catch a glimpse of the game to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

The story begins with a letter and a house called Lavender Laithe in North Yorkshire, UK. A recently deceased relative, Mrs Kettlewell, also known as Tabitha, leaves you the keys along with instructions. The latter are a bit blunt at first glance, asking you to clear out the place and sell anything valuable to fund a holiday.

Inside the house, you find that she had been working on memoirs that were supposed to be published. A mishap has left those pages damaged, with missing words scattered throughout. So, you now get a new task of reconstructing a life story.

A Storied Life: Tabitha spans across multiple chapters, beginning with Chapter 1: A Warm Welcome. Each chapter opens up spaces in the house one by one, starting with the Porch and then the Dining Room. You move through them, digging into cupboards, lifting rugs, shifting furniture, and uncovering hidden objects.

A Storied Life Tabitha is available now on PC via Steam and on Nintendo Switch. It’s priced at $14.99 with a 10% launch discount on Steam.
