There’s a new indie release bringing a scenario that some of us might have experienced at some point in our lives. It goes by the name I Can Only Speak Doner and is from developer and publisher Fokaia Studio.

I Can Only Speak Doner is now available on Steam. The usual cost is $4.49, but you can grab it at a 10% discount until April 14th, 2026. Before I tell you about the premise, take a look (or two) at this new casual sim.

I Can Only Speak Doner comes in different flavours

The game lets you play as someone who has moved to a foreign country to work at their uncle’s doner shop. But there’s a major problem… You don’t understand a single word of the local language.

The core loop revolves around slicing, grilling, and serving doner during hectic rush hours. However, before you even get to the cooking part, you have to figure out what people are trying to order.

Customers don’t just neatly tell you what they want. Instead, you hand them a menu, watch where they point, try to interpret their gestures, and jot something down.

If you mess it up, they react, sometimes with a finger wag, and you scramble to fix your guess before their patience runs out. It turns ordering into a small puzzle every single time.

Once you actually lock in an order, I Can Only Speak Doner transitions into a rhythm-heavy cooking sim. Oh, and did I tell you it’s all keyboard-based and no mouse?

You have to hit the right key combinations to slice meat, toast bread, and assemble wraps quickly and accurately. When the lunch rush hits, you’ll see that the style is inspired by Cook, Serve, Delicious.

The customers are quite a bunch, too! Some might try to steal from your tip jar if you’re not paying attention. Then there are the picky eaters who want very specific ingredients.

Outside of the shop, I Can Only Speak Doner adds a bit of strategy with how you spend your evenings. You can choose between going to a language centre, throwing a party to boost your shop’s popularity, or going shopping to pick up things like tip boxes, drink dispensers, and new ingredients.

Overall, I Can Only Speak Doner sounds like a pretty fun title. But if fantasy is more of your choice, then read our scoop on Alice in Wonder Underland.
