When it comes to the action-packed professional wrestling video game, WWE 2K always provides a joyful endeavor of players’ fan-favorite wrestlers going at each other in a series of match types. As there have been several WWE titles under the banner of WWE 2K, WWE 2K26 is the twelfth title for 2K, which brings back a roster of over 400 wrestlers and several game modes, each offering a unique experience. With these many new additions, the only thing left to uncover is whether it is really a worthy successor of past titles or not. This is our review of WWE 2K26, developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K.
Gameplay
The first and foremost aspect of WWE 2K26 that any old player would ask is how the game is actually different and feels. Well, right off the bat, the game feels more responsive and has fewer glitches than ever before. The physics of throwing your opponents or launching at them is never broken, so it feels good.
In terms of the Gameplay mechanics, it is pretty much the same if you think about throwing punches at your opponents and grabbing them to perform various moves. All the premises of the Light Attacks, Heavy Attacks, Blocking, Dodging, and Reversal are the same as the previous installments. However, it offers smoother counter mechanics, crowd combat, and unpredictable brawls.
This Super Finisher is quite impressive and devastating for the opponents, as they don’t get a glimpse of hope for kicking out once they receive a Super Finisher. However, not all the Superstars have the capability of performing the Super Finisher, so be sure to check the Move List of your Superstar from the menu to confirm it.
Trading Blows brings up a brief mini-game on the screen for both of the contestants in which they have to press the button at the right time to perform a blow to the opponent. After each blow, the time length compresses, allowing players to focus more and get a chance to outsmart the opponent to drop them to the mat.
Other than the main gameplay mechanics of the game, the introductory tutorial of the game is also smooth, and it lets you go over all the basic attacks to advanced grapple attacks fluently. The flying through rope attacks feel much more fluent in WWE 2K26. Lastly, the interactive entrances are nice, giving more immersion to set the tone for the fight.
Expanded Gameplay
In addition to the main gameplay and core mechanics of wrestling, the Chain Wrestling technique also returns in WWE 2K26. As the match starts, you and your opponent can go for a grapple, initiating Chain Wrestling mechanics. Here, you will have to fill in the circle after selecting one of the three moves: Attack, Drive, or Switch. The player who fills up the circle first gets the advantage. The Intergender Matches also return in WWE 2K26. You can select a Superstar from the Men’s Roster and choose a Female Superstar for the opponent from the Diva Roster or vice versa.
Furthermore, there are now new modes, including I Quit, Inferno, and Dumpster. The I Quit is a hardcore submission match in which you have to make the opponent vulnerable to say “I Quit”. This mode includes a new mini-game, where you have to press the correct buttons to fill the meter. Inferno is a unique match where the ring’s ropes are on fire. Your goal is to set your opponent on fire to get the win. This new match mode also includes a new mini-game in which you have to raise the Inferno Meter. The Dumpster mode is similar to the casket and Ambulance match modes.
In addition to the new modes, the Island also received a new interactive brawl arena called the Scrapyard. It is a big rustic brawl area where you can access several items, including shopping carts, trash cans, cinder blocks, double tables, and thumbtacks. The overall design of the arena gives a wasteland-style environment. It is a centerpiece of the “island” story mode and is also available for the Exhibition matches.
MyGM and MyUniverse
There are some major improvements across MyGM and MyUniverse features in WWE 2K26. MyGM now includes longer seasons with higher budgets. It offers expanded match types, including Intergender Matches, new PLE options, and new stipulations. Moreover, the smarter AI ensures better competitive ratings for the shows. Furthermore, there are unique abilities and power cards for the new GMs.
MyUniverse now includes a more streamlined setup tool that helps players customize their universe effectively. You can dynamically shuffle rosters and choose to control a single Superstar’s career or manage the entire Universe. MyUniverse gives more freedom to adjust rivalries, PPVs, and shows with better details. Last but not least, the navigation of the menus is faster, and scheduling is way smoother.
Ringside Pass
Now, let’s talk about the most hated change in the 2K series, the Ringside Pass. The Ringside Pass is the battle pass system in WWE 2K26 that replaces the old DLC Pack Model for the DLC Superstars and content. It has the tier progression system that unlocks arenas, championships, card packs, cosmetics, and DLC Superstars, movesets, and MyFaction content. Now, the problem is that the DLC Superstars and all the good items are behind the premium version of the Ringside Pass. Moreover, it requires a ridiculous amount of RXP for each tier for you to unlock the reward. To be honest, the DLC Pack Model was better, as you instantly gain access to all the content. With the Ringside Pass, you still have to grind or pay more money for the tiers to unlock the content.
Sound and Visuals
WWE 2K26 does an immaculate job on both sound and visual representation of the grand scale stages and Superstars. The voice-overs are great, and the commentary for all the matches is just better than any other previous installments. There aren’t any limited voice lines for each match that you would hear again and again, as the commentary has been improved greatly and enhances the overall experience in each match.
Superstars’ facial expressions have been improved, which gives a nice touch of realism, and one of the very big changes in representing these visual improvements is the cutscenes. The entrance cutscenes are made perfectly for each Superstar as they look more real and grand than ever before.
Verdict – 8.5/10
WWE 2K26 is one of the best wrestling sports games out there, as it will both let you enjoy the classic wrestling match with modern-day gaming aspects, as well as let you control the entire WWE Universe. The scale of the game is more massive than ever before. Despite the fact that it requires you to grind even after paying for Premium Ringside Pass, all the other features of WWE 2K26 are the best ones we have seen so far in this series.
WWE 2K26 is now available on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Microsoft Windows.
