Bonereaders is an indie Russian developer who has created some interesting PC titles recently. After Loretta, Anoxia Station, and Dom Rusalok, they are gearing up for their next release on Steam. This time, the title itself is called Bonereader.
A casual adventure and strategy game, Bonereaders plans to release Bonereader later this year. The Steam page is now live for players to wishlist, and so is a brand-new trailer. Oh, and a Steam demo will be available as well from April 21st, 2026.
What exactly is Bonereader about?
It’s a card-based deckbuilding title with dice mechanics. The story begins Harlan Hill, a seasoned mercenary who is executed in the electric chair and dies believing he was betrayed. He wakes up in a shamanic, mescaline-fuelled Purgatory inspired by the novels of Carlos Castaneda and Cormac McCarthy.
The hut he wakes up in is that of an old shaman. He challenges Harlan to a game of dice consisting of four rounds, with rebirth and possibly revenge on the line. Yep, it’s a strange afterlife where the dead gamble for a second life.
A spirit claims ownership over Harlan’s soul and mocks him. But after winning the matches, he leaves the hut and begins wandering through a dreamlike and hallucinatory Purgatory. There, justice is unclear, and fate is determined by numbers, cards, and nerves.
Bonereader consists of four main rounds and two game modes. Story Mode focuses on the narrative journey through Purgatory and follows Harlan Hill’s story. Casino Roguelike Mode focuses more on risk, roguelike mechanics, and increasing stakes.
The game includes 30 unique combination cards, 40 dice with different properties, and 20 items. It also features different playstyles built around dice suits and card synergies. Each opponent has their own house rule that changes how matches work and forces players to adapt.
