Gwen Top’s guide to enjoying her premiere this season 11. Don’t get lost with her runes and learn some fundamental mechanics to master with the new League of Legends champion.
The doubts about Gwen’s runes, items, counters or mechanics are more than justified with her recent arrival in League of Legends. Even so, we all want to play the new champion and do so with certain guarantees to get the most out of it as possible. The task will not be accessible at all, but after two weeks of testing and a few days since it arrived on the live server, it is time to risk this character.

Gwen: Runes, Build and Object Order
Choosing objects with Gwen is not very mysterious. The only variation on Mythic items that we have found is to replace the Rift Creamer with a Hextech Cynthomissile. However, in most games, we would strongly prefer the former to have greater online sustainability and allow us to push in parallel even after an unfavorable trade. Playing well (and we’ll get into that later), the champion doesn’t really need the extra mobility.
We will bet on a combination of three items with the already mentioned mythical at the head, and that will inevitably continue with the Nashor’s Tooth as the second object. It is essential in Gwen since it enhances her passive and allows us to increase the damage per hit. The basics are one of the champion’s best tools. We close this initial trio with the Zhonya Hourglass to increase our resistance. All this, spiced up with defensive boots to taste or if we feel very confident, lucid Ionian footwear as an offensive option.
Alternative objects
Among the must-have items, there are two to go for as soon as possible: Crevasse and Nashor’s Tooth. However, from our third object (and although we always recommend not delaying the Zhonya beyond the fourth) we have a multitude of alternatives to choose from. We order them according to our preference:
- Demonic Embrace: Perfect against tanks to increase our maximum damage per enemy life. It is important that you never give priority if you do not have a “piece of meat” to hit.
- Morellonomicom: This situational choice will help us cut the heals of the enemies. It can be crucial in duels because if they can’t hold out online and we can (thanks to Crackmaker), we have a free hand for individual dueling.
- Staff of the Void: Exceptional alternative that we will always build as the third or fourth option if we do not need either of the two items mentioned above.
- Cosmic Boost: It is a very good option due to the speed of skills and for which we have seen many professionals choose. You must take it into account, especially if you go ahead.
- Liche Bane: It sounds like a great idea, and it will give us a fair amount of damage, but it is usually not worth it unless we want to meet the enemy turrets.
- Rabbadon’s Mortal Hat: It is an always exceptional AP item, but it deals too much damage and leaves us without any other interesting statistics. If we are in an ultra-long game looking for a fifth or sixth object, it may be a good option.
Gwen’s rules do not allow much discussion, but a couple of variants. The Conqueror seems mandatory and we will combine it with a Triumph, Swiftness, and Coup de Grace. A classic of the Precisionbranch for which we have found two variables. One is to modify Conquistador for Lightfoot against the more difficult lines (especially in the center lane). The second is more subtle: change Coup de Grace to Knocked Down in specific lines against tanks (Cho’Gath, Ornn …).
As we are sure of the whole, it is in the secondary branch of Domination, which will use both Impact Sudden as Hunter Voraz.
How to play Gwen?
Lines phase
If you’re one of those players looking to win every League of Legends game in the first few minutes, Gwen is probably not for you. The new champion is, at least for now, one of the worst in the game during the earlier stages of the game. However, it has evasive and defensive tools so that the first levels go by quickly until we reach our peak of power with two objects, and in case of receiving ambushes and getting ahead, we can do more than interesting things.
You will probably choke during the first few games, but don’t despair. His late game is worth it, and if we find security in the first minutes and a somewhat calm climb, we will cut the rivals into a thousand pieces. The best way to play the phase of the line is, therefore, with tons of patience.
- Level 1 – Q (Cut It Out!): Champion’s main move, ideal for trading and clearing waves. It doesn’t have much damage in the early game, and you should load it up with auto-attacks.
- Level 2 – E (Lethal Sewing): Your primary travel tool. Perform more offensively, but don’t go crazy in the early levels. Since we have complete the Nashor Tooth is bestial.
- Level 3 – W (Holy Mist): Defensive option that helps you dodge all abilities thrown from outside the area. It’s perfect for fighting champions without worrying about those outside the circle and avoiding initiations.
- Level 6 – R (Burst of Needles): Perfect to start earning trades, but requires being in combat for extended periods of time. Use it without fear, but remember that if its three activations cannot be used, it is better to turn around than to lose for it.
Mid and late gameLoL – Gwen Top Guide: Counters, build, runes, tips and tricks
The simple way to explain it is to say that Gwen is some kind of Fiora in AP. He’s not necessarily one of those terrible group-fight champions who only have one strategy available. However, it is intended to play a more tactical League of Legends based on split push. Most of their damage scales based on the opponent’s life, and that in skirmishers is always a sign of one-on-one duels.
If you do have to fight in a group, make the most of Lethal Seam resets and try to hit as many enemies as possible with Burst of Needles while shielding yourself with the Holy Mist. Remember that this last ability, if you keep your distance, makes you invulnerable to all spells. You can stare at a hail of bullets from the middle of the storm while having a laugh at the expense of the enemy Miss Fortune.
Favorable counters and confrontations
Gwen beats …: Tanks. He has a tailor-made kit to kill them and, in general, with all the champions who accumulate many points of life in League of Legends. Therefore, you can also take it into account against the Illaoi or the Kled on duty.
Gwen is countered …: At the moment, almost everything else. Think above all of the characters that meet two characteristics: high mobility and ways to cut distance. You want to stay within the W when you use it. This is why Pantheon is so good against her.
Tips and tricks
- Really, don’t get horny: you have to get two items or have a lot of gold and level advantage in order to win before your time arrives. Sorry, but we had to insist.
- Use the E ( Lethal Seam ) to get closer to the opponent and get the charges of the Q ( Thousand Cuts ) while the cooldown of the first ability returns. Thus, you can have an extra glide to use offensively or defensively while waving the scissors.
- In addition, Lethal Seam provides 100 units of extra rank and allows us to exchange from outside the range of most melee enemies.
- The R ( Burst of Needles ) has three activations, so it should be used at the beginning of exchanges. It can be used again after each attack with any skill or basic to any target. If one hit flash escapes, hit a minion and try to finish it off.
- The W ( Holy Mist ) protects us from ranged attacks. Keep this in mind when abilities are thrown at you from outside the perimeter so you can protect yourself
