Many fans are wondering if Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is canon. While the series is known for its zaniness, this entry seems even hammier than usual. So, we’ll look at whether this is a spinoff like Dead Souls or a part of the prime timeline.

Is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii canon?

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is canon, despite the goofy premise. There’s no indicator in the game that it’s any less canon than some of the other spinoffs in the series, like Judgment or Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Some players may think it’s part of an alternate universe like Dead Souls. Still, there’s nothing that happens that contradicts past entries (such as everyone turning into zombies).

However, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is almost completely self-contained. It heavily references Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (and is even titled Like a Dragon 8 Gaiden: Pirates in Hawaii in Japan). Still, it’s doubtful that it’ll affect future events in the series too much. We expect some of the new characters to reappear in future games, and Majima might make a mention of it, but the story in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii doesn’t have major ramifications for the franchise as a whole.
