“Someone’s got to do down for this.” Metrograph has revealed the official US trailer for a highly regarded Indian film called Santosh, one of the two big breakout films from India at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival this year (All We Imagine as Light is the other). Santosh opens in US theaters at the end of the year and will be submitted by the UK as their pick for Best International Film at the Academy Awards in 2025. I think it has a strong chance to be nominated because it’s cinematic. Newly widowed Santosh inherits her husband’s job as a police constable in the rural badlands of Northern India. When a girl’s body is found, she’s pulled into the investigation under the wing of the charismatic feminist inspector Sharma, learning uncomfortable truths about corruption & caste in Indian society. Starring Shahana Goswami as Santosh, with Sunita Rajwar, Sanjay Bishnoi, Kushal Dubey, Nawal Shukla, & Pratibha Awasthi. This film is fantastic! I wrote a rave review of it, saying, “this is the kind of engaging, smart, vibrant cinema I am always looking forward to discovering at any festival.” Keep an eye out for this film playing in your local art house theater. // Continue Reading ›
