“In my journey to find out who is Mavis Beacon, I learned who she wasn’t…” Neon has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Seeking Mavis Beacon, created by filmmaker Jazmin Jones making her feature directorial debut. This film originally premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, and it will arrive in theaters later in August. The most recognizable woman in technology lives in our collective imagination. “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing” is an iconic software program that taught millions globally (decades ago for old computers), but the software’s Haitian-born cover model vanished decades ago. Two “DIY” detectives search for the model while posing questions about identity and artificial intelligence, digital security, and Black representation in the digital realm. The film investigates the mystery and reexamines the legacy of one of the recognizable Black women within technology. Alas the filmmakers don’t discover much trying to find out who the “Mavis Beacon” model is, but the film is less about that and more about this director’s journey investigating her & making this doc.
