Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a new action-adventure video game from Kepler Interactive which is famous for its games like Pacific Drive, Scorn, and Tchia. However, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn differs from any of their past games and takes inspiration from the Soulslike genre.
Several features of the game are similar to Soulslike but various other mechanics in gameplay and combat bring uniqueness to it. Most players familiar with Soulslike should find its combat reminiscent, but mechanics like disrupting, priming, and magic are essential for overcoming a losing fight.
This guide explains all the mechanics and systems that are crucial in combat in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn – Complete Combat Guide
The combat in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is mostly inspired by Soulslike Games including a combat design with a melee weapon and a ranged weapon to fight the enemies and dash movement to dodge the incoming attacks.
Basic Combat Mechanics
The basic combat mechanics include the use of your primary weapon and dodging incoming attacks. Press the R1/RB to attack with your primary melee weapon and mash it repeatedly to do a full combo. Press the Circle/B button to dash in the directed direction to dodge the incoming attack. Moreover, if you hold the dodge button while running you will do a slide in the directed direction.
How to Use Firearms
Nor (the main protagonist) also holds a firearm with her that acts as a ranged weapon. You can hold up to firearms in your adventure. To shoot the primary firearm, first lock on to the target by pressing the R3/Right Stick Button and then press the R2/RT button. Shooting a firearm will consume a black powder charge which then can be restored by attacking enemies. Hitting an enemy four times will replenish 1 black powder charge.
As you make progress in the main story, you will acquire a secondary firearm. To shoot the secondary firearm, hold the L2/LT button to free-aim and then press the R2/RT button.
Using your firearms is crucial during combat as they will allow you to damage enemies from a safe distance as well as disrupt them if shot at the perfect time. Disrupting an enemy will require you to shoot at them whenever they are about to strike. It will knock the enemy down allowing you to hit them freely.
Moreover, there are various stronger enemies with Break Attacks (can’t be blocked nor parried) which you can disrupt by shooting your firearm at them when a red indicator appears on them.
How to Block, Parry, and Counterattack
Blocking and Parrying is done with your primary weapon. Hold the L1/LB to go into the block stance and block the incoming attacks. However, blocking several attacks will break your stance and make you vulnerable. To parry an incoming attack, you need to press the L1/LB right before the enemy is about to attack. Parrying an enemy will leave them vulnerable allowing you to attack them freely.
Moreover, parrying an enemy attack also gives you a small window to do a counterattack. After a successful parry, press the R1/RB to do a counterattack on the enemy.
How to Use the Withering Attack
Withering is a special magical ability that you use with the help of your Fox (God) companion, Enki. However, it is only possible when the Withering Gauge (diamond icon on the bottom right of the screen) is fully charged. Defeating the enemies will replenish the Withering Gauge. To use a withering, press the Triangle + L1/Y + LB at the same time.
How to Prime Enemies, Perform Critical Attack
Alongside the general health bar, an enemy also has a priming gauge located above their health bar. You can fill up an enemy’s priming gauge with the help of Enki. Order Enki to use a curse attack on an enemy by pressing the Triangle/Y button to fill up their priming gauge. Ordering Enki each time will consume 1 curse attack point which fills up over time.
Once the enemy has been primed, you will have a short window to land a critical attack on them. Press the R1/RB or R2/RT to perform a critical attack on a primed enemy.
Moreover, some of the enemies that you will face during the adventure will be armored. To remove their armor, you will have to prime them or attack accordingly to retreat back without taking any damage. Once the armored enemy is primed, their health bar will appear indicating that you can now defeat them.
