Zenless Zone Zero offers comprehensive combat including various mechanics and systems that work together for you to deal a big chunk of damage on opponents. Learning the combat mechanics and systems is crucial to grasping them and utilizing your agents’ attacks/specials accordingly.
This guide explains all the mechanics and systems that are crucial in combat in Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ).
Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) – Complete Combat Guide
Zenless Zone Zero includes real-time combat where you fully control your selected agent/character to land basic attacks, use special attacks, dodge incoming attacks, use the ultimate (if charged), and even switch to another agent. Moreover, along with all the basic fight patterns in Zenless Zone Zero, there are various other mechanics like Staggering enemies, inflicting enemies with an Anomaly, Countering enemies with a perfect dodge, Chain Attacks, and charging your Ultimate.
All Attacks and Controls
Speaking of attacks during combat, there are six main actions: Basic Attack, Dodge, Special Attack, EX Special Attack, Ultimate, and Switch Agent. The basic attack is the normal attack of agents that you can use to attack the enemies swiftly. Dodge is used for dashing in a direction to avoid getting hit by an incoming attack. Every agent has a special attack that they can use at any time during the fight to deal more damage than a regular basic attack.
Moreover, as you use the basic attacks, it will generate Energy (Purple Bar) and as it surpasses the red line in the middle of the bar, you will be able to use the EX Special Attack which is the same as the regular special attack but deals more damage. Energy also regenerates over time and you might also find items like Energy Matter which can be picked up to generate Energy for all the agents.
Ultimate is the strongest attack of every agent and you will be able to use your ultimate once it has charged. However, the ultimate can only be used once for all the agents until it recharges again. Lastly, you can switch between the agents by pressing the respective key but it has a limited use of 6 switches. Fortunately, you can earn back the points for switching agents by using Ultimate and Chain Attacks.
How to Stagger Enemies in ZZZ
The first mechanic that you should know about is staggering/dazing enemies. If you look below the enemy’s HP, you will see an Orange Bar. This bar represents the Daze Gauge. It fills up as you attack the enemies with your basic, special, chain, and ultimate attacks. Once the gauge is filled, the enemy will stagger allowing you to deal as much damage as possible before the enemy stands back up.
How to Perform Dodge Counters in ZZZ
The next thing is performing Dodge Counters to punish your enemies even more and securing yourself some extra gained Energy for EX Special Attacks. You can perform the Dodge Counters by doing a Perfect Dodge. To do a Perfect Dodge, press the dodge button at the time of the yellow/orange flash on the enemy because it indicates that the enemy is attacking. Doing so will allow you to follow up a counter by pressing the normal basic attack button.
However, it does need to be timed perfectly so you will have to practice your dodges according to the yellow flashes to punish the enemies with counters.
How to Perform Chain Attacks in ZZZ
The Chain Attack is performed by staggering/dazing the enemy. Upon dazing the enemy, you will automatically enter the phase of Chain Attacks where you will get a couple of seconds to choose the next agent to perform the chain attack. Furthermore, there are also types of Chain Attacks and these are determined by the type of enemy you just dazed. If you daze a normal mob, you can do only 1 chain attack, if you daze a mini-boss, you can do 2 chain attacks in a row, and if you daze a major boss, you can do 3 chain attacks in a row.
How to Inflict Anomaly on Enemies in ZZZ
In addition to dazing enemies, you can also inflict certain anomalies on the enemies corresponding to the elemental/attribute type of the agent you are using. To inflict an anomaly on the enemy, you need to keep hitting them with your basic and special attacks to fill up the Anomaly Gauge of the enemy located in front of the enemy’s HP.
How to Charge Ultimate in ZZZ
While you are fighting the enemies, you will see your Ultimate icon dull most of the time. It is because it needs to be charged which is only possible by maxing out the Decibels (numbers on the left side of the screen). The Decibels are increased with every attack, counter, chain attack, special attack, and ultimate, and it maxed out at 3,000. Once you have maxed out the Decibels, the ultimate will be ready for you to use. However, keep in mind that you can use only one ultimate with any agent until the ultimate is charged again.
How Bangboos Work in Combat in ZZZ
In addition to your party of 3 agents, you can also bring a Bangboo to the fights. They will help you regardless during the fight by attacking the enemies with their basic attack from time to time, and you can also call them during the Chain Attacks. Moreover, each Bangboo has certain requirements and if you match those requirements, they will provide certain buffs to you during the fight.
Apart from these main mechanics and systems of combat in Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ), make sure to build your party strategically by seeing all the stats and attributes. Having a party of agents with various elemental types and a supporter will help greatly against difficult foes.
