I find rodents terrible and am actually quite scared of them. Especially rats and mice. They’re not cute, they’re not charming, and if one suddenly runs past my feet, I’m leaving the building. Developer Greedy Games’ upcoming game I Am Plague feels like the exact opposite of exposure therapy for me.

I Am Plague has been revealed alongside an open playtest that runs from October 5th to October 19th. It’s a dark incremental roguelite with thousands of rats, all in one giant angry hivemind. Published by Digital Vortex Entertainment, the game is coming to PC through Steam, with the full release planned for 2027.

It’s horrible!

For centuries, a colony of rats has been living underneath a grand capital, surviving in the darkness. You take control of the enormous swarm and try to guide it through more than 200 floors of an underground fortress, eating anything unfortunate enough to get in the way.

Meanwhile, humanity sends soldiers and priests, alchemists and mechanical constructs, parasites, monsters, and even angels to stop the horde. But the disgusting rats? They respond by devouring their enemies, taking their flesh and skulls, and becoming even stronger.

I Am Plague brings a combination of automatic combat and roguelite progression. Your first attempts at climbing the fortress can end in death almost immediately. Every run gives you resources, and you spend the flesh and skulls on the Tree of Flesh and Tree of Bones. They let you permanently improve the colony’s base stats and unlock new mutations.

During each climb, you pick from three mutations on every floor, while shops give you more opportunities to expand your build. There will be more than 200 dungeon floors and 50+ mutations in the full game, spread across multiple rarity tiers.

And what’s in the current playtest of I Am Plague?

You get 50 dungeon floors and 40 mutations across multiple rarity tiers. And there’s also support for inviting up to three friends. To join the I Am Plague playtest, you need to request access through the game’s Steam store page. The playtest is available in English, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Portuguese, and Polish.
