PineFog Studios has announced Tattie Bogle, a co-op farming-defense roguelite for PC. You’re not playing as the farmer. You’re the enchanted scarecrow whose entire job is keeping the farm from getting absolutely wrecked by pests, critters and weird folklore nightmares.
It’s a change in perspective, I agree
Farming games usually have you planting stuff, watering it, selling it and living your best cottagecore life. Here, the farmer is still doing all that. But you’re not him or her. You’re the scarecrow brought to life by a Tomte, a whiskered little gnome from Scandinavian folklore.
Tattie Bogle mixes farming sim with tower defense and roguelite progression. During the day, you’re trying to grow and harvest crops while dealing with waves of normal pests. Then night rolls around, and suddenly the woods start producing things that absolutely shouldn’t be near your vegetable patch.
As the scarecrow, you can use directional fear blasts to scare pests away, or just get physical with them using garden tools. There are six different tools, including fists, a hoe, pitchfork, rake, shovel and trowel, and each has its own attacks and feel.
You can also build defenses while the enemies are already coming at you. There are eight placeable structures, including Lures, Trenches, Stinging Nettles, Spook Stones, Vine Nets, Straw Mats, Barley Hay Bales and Farming Plots. You can upgrade several of these through multiple tiers.
The enemies in Tattie Bogle change depending on what time it is
Deer and bunnies show up around dawn, while bears start lumbering in during the afternoon. And once it gets properly dark, things get much worse. There are ghouls, mushroom goblins and other folklore-inspired creatures. There are 13 enemy types, and they use grid pathfinding, flow-field swarming and a three-band fear system to determine how they behave.
Every day cycles through different periods, and each one brings something new to the crops. The waves keep getting stronger the longer the farm survives, too. There are 10 crops to grow in Tattie Bogle, and they all have their own growth stages, yields and market values.
Tattie Bogle is coming to Steam later this year.
