Games like World of Horror have already proved that manga-inspired horror can be one of the best themes in the genre. Now, upcoming horror game NOL is doing the same. I mean, it’s bringing a noir horror manga-inspired world in a Silent Hill-like trope.
NOL is a first-person psychological horror title developed by Team NOL and self-published by its lead creator, Sanditio Bayu. It’s also Team NOL’s very first game, with Bayu saying that the goal is to make the nightmare exploration accessible to everyone.
Dreams, dreams, dreams, …
You play as Guntur, whose soul ends up trapped inside a cursed dream world after reading about the massacre of his childhood friend’s family. He wakes up in his friend’s cursed family home, where evil spirits roam every corner. His job is to dig through dreams, memories, and shifting realities to uncover what really happened.
That dream setting is a huge part of NOL. You revisit Guntur’s thoughts and memories as he struggles with the bereavement of losing his friends after the brutally violent murders. Exploring the house, he searches for clues about the massacre while dealing with mysterious events and supernatural threats.
The entire game takes place inside a relatively small house, but being in a dream changes everything. The house itself can change, impossible things can happen, and you have to expect the unexpected. As for the defense-slash-combat part, you defend yourself using regular household items. Sandals, buckets, dippers, water buckets, and whatever else you might find lying around the house become your weapons against evil spirits.
Visually, NOL has sketch-like black-and-white visuals. Every texture and sprite has been manually hand-drawn by artist Khalid Albakaziy. The atmosphere is also backed up by unsettling sound effects and background music that keep the tension high throughout the experience.
NOL is available to wishlist on Steam. By the way, Nol is Indonesian for zero.
