Slow, emotional horror games surely make you more uncomfortable than scared. The upcoming SOMBRAS: negative frames is one such psychological horror title. The game just revealed its release date, and it’s coming to Steam along with other platforms on December 3rd, 2026.
SOMBRAS: negative frames is developed by Maboroshi Artworks and published by Entalto Publishing. It’s mainly an adventure game with simulation elements, psychological horror and cinematic storytelling. Take a look at the latest trailer below.
SOMBRAS: negative frames revolves around photography
The story follows Shiomi Alterio, a Japanese-Spanish photography student. She’s trying to adjust to a completely different life after her parents recently divorced. She now lives with her father in a quiet Japanese town after being forced to leave her life in Europe behind.
One night, she’s pulled into a dark mirror version of her hometown that’s filled with hungry shadows, twisted versions of familiar streets, and a bunch of girls who all look exactly like her. So, your goal is to help Shiomi find her way back home.
SOMBRAS: negative frames focuses on rebuilding her identity by confronting fragments of her own mind. You’ll be taking photos of strange sights, surviving creepy encounters, and reuniting every broken piece of yourself.
You’ll be exploring an atmospheric, liminal version of Shiomi’s 2000s Japanese hometown, which exists as a dark reflection born from her own psyche. The game has a full photography system where you’ll take pictures, develop your film rolls, and earn inspiration that you can use to upgrade your camera.
This is Maboroshi Artworks’ second game after their award-winning Last Time I Saw You. According to the team, SOMBRAS: negative frames is a nostalgic narrative game that explores themes of youth, art, mixed identity, and dysfunctional family systems.
SOMBRAS: negative frames launches on Steam for PC on December 3rd. It’s also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
