Bibdu Is a Hand-Painted RPG with Collectible Cards Inspired by Irish Mythology

Titles with unique art styles always grab my attention. This weekend, while scrolling through some upcoming titles on Steam, I stumbled across Bibdu. Set in Ancient Ireland, it’s completely hand-painted and is based on Irish mythology.

The adventure RPG is developed and published by the indie Rat and Monkey Studio. The game recreates real historic locations as they may have looked around 2,000 years ago. It includes places like Newgrange, Rathcrogan, and the Hill of Tara, and interpretations of ancient dolmens, ringforts, and settlements.

Bibdu offers open-world exploration and strategic card battles

You get to explore Ancient Ireland however you want. You can follow the main story, hunt down side quests, or just wander around the world. Along the way, you’ll discover settlements, enemies, bosses, quests, and different points of interest spread across the map.

Since Bibdu is based on Irish mythology, you’ll meet the Tuatha Dé, the ancient Irish gods. It retells stories from the Mythological, Ulster, and Fenian Cycles. You can experience quests inspired by famous legends like the Children of Lir, An Táin Bó Cúailnge, also known as The Cattle Raid of Cooley, and Aisling Óengus, or The Dream of Aengus.

If you’re wondering what the title means, well, Bibdu is an old Irish word meaning one who is Guilty or Condemned. You play as Macha, one of the legendary Tuatha Dé, who has been banished from the immortal realm of Tír na nÓg, the Land of the Young, and cursed to live as a mortal.

The game includes legendary figures like Macha, Lugh Lámhfada, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, Cú Chulainn, Queen Medb, The Morrigan, Balor, and An Dagda. And you’ll constantly be balancing mortality against morality. Everything from the choices you make to the quests you pursue, ignore, finish, or abandon will shape your journey and lead to multiple different endings.

Native Irish animals become collectible cards that you use in strategic turn-based battles. There’s no traditional deck management, so you don’t draw, shuffle, or discard cards. You get three card slots during battle, while extra cards created through abilities go into a fourth overflow slot.

Bibdu is now available to wishlist on Steam for PC. If funding allows, Rat and Monkey Studio also wants to bring it to Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X/S.
