PlayStation is offering PS5 and PS4 players a free multiplayer weekend while facing intense backlash following yesterday’s developments. From Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 5, all users can play any game of their choice online without a PS Plus subscription.

Sony’s free PlayStation multiplayer weekend offer isn’t going down well right now

Although Sony announced the free multiplayer weekend before dropping the digital-only-future bomb on players, the offer was met with an overwhelmingly negative response:

“Online is always free on PC,” wrote one player. “Oh wow, gee, thanks for allowing me to play online for free games I already paid for,” wrote another. “No reason to buy anything since I don’t own anything, and you can delete the catalog any time,” reads one response.

To be fair to Sony, free multiplayer weekends aren’t anything new, and this offer isn’t an attempt to placate anyone, but the timing is unfortunate.

As folks over at PushSquare noted, the company has gone radio silent on social media following intense backlash, choosing to make certain announcements — like the PS Plus Essential July lineup — only on the PS Blog. Normally, the company shares all PS Blog news on its social media pages. However, nothing has been posted since this announcement:
