Following the announcement that PlayStation disc production is shutting down, Sony dropped another bomb today by announcing the complete closure of PS3 and PS Vita stores. The writing was on the wall for quite some time, but this development will still disappoint many.
PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Stores will cease to exist by July 2027
The PS3 and Vita store closures have been scheduled as follows, per Sony:
Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.
“As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required,” Sony argued. “PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.”
A previous attempt by Sony to shut down the dated PS Storefronts was met with swift backlash, prompting the company to reverse its decision. Don’t expect a similar response this time around. Given the state of both stores, this decision is most certainly final.
