I feel like we don’t get enough puzzle games that fully commit to a weird, artsy vibe anymore. And that’s why Helix: Descent N Ascent grabbed my attention. With exploration and atmosphere, it uses black-and-white art in interesting ways.
Belgian indie studio Badass Mongoose has announced the release date for Helix: Descent N Ascent. It launches on July 23rd, 2026, for PC through Steam and Nintendo Switch. The release date was revealed during The Mix – Kinda Funny Spring Game Showcase.
A bit like Limbo
In a minimalist hand-drawn monochrome art style, Helix: Descent N Ascent lets you explore a dark, mysterious world as a lone, small being. It takes inspiration from 1980s black-and-white indie comics, 1990s manga, and 1970s Franco-Belgian comics.
You wake up in a dull, dark, disembodied world without really knowing what’s going on. Even though you’re mostly alone, you eventually run into another being who looks exactly like you. The catch is that this doppelganger always seems to be working against you.
Helix: Descent N Ascent focuses on exploration and solving puzzles. As you keep descending into Helix, ancient powers begin awakening inside you. And you use those embodied abilities to uncover the secrets of a forgotten civilisation. There’s a deeper emotional story that reflects on identity, solitude, and relationships.
Take a look at the game below.
The soundtrack comes from Jim Guthrie, whose work you might already know from Sword and Sorcery, Nobody Saves The World, and Below. The score is made to pull players into a dreamlike, serene, and strange universe.
Another thing I really like is that there are no long conversations or walls of dialogue to tell the story. It’s a tale told without words, using black-and-white artwork, living 2D scenery, evocative paintings, and the atmospheric soundtrack.
So, Helix: Descent N Ascent arrives on PC through Steam and Nintendo Switch on July 23rd, 2026.
