First revealed at Summer Games Fest 2024, Deer & Boy was shown again during the recent AG French Direct. The title focuses on cinematic storytelling without dialogue. And I’m not exaggerating when I say this one might even make you cry.
A very dreamy, sad, and beautiful world
The story follows a runaway boy who gets lost and runs into a scared little fawn. Pretty quickly, they realise they both need each other to survive all the emotional and physical hurdles ahead of them. So, the two become each other’s entire support system.
One of the interesting aspects is how the deer changes over time. Early on, the fawn is fragile and vulnerable, and you’re protecting it. Later, though, it grows into a full majestic deer that becomes strong enough to help protect the boy, too. So, the relationship evolves mechanically and emotionally at the same time.
LifeLine Games is the developer of Deer & Boy, and it’s their debut project. The devs didn’t want words to get in the way of the relationship between the boy and the fawn. So, there are no dialogue trees, no voice acting, no text boxes interrupting things every few minutes.
You can call Deer & Boy a poetic cinematic platformer and a narrative adventure. It acts as a crossing into adulthood as the journey progresses. The deer matures, the boy changes, and the adventure shifts from survival into something more reflective and emotional.
The game has breathtaking visuals, beautiful 3D environments, and an animation movie-like presentation. Publisher Dear Villagers has dropped a new trailer. Take a look at it below.
When’s the game coming?
In June 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch. There’s a demo live on Steam right now, so you can try a chapter of it already.
