While The Florist isn’t a new announcement, with the first trailer being released around 6 months ago, we now have a short gameplay trailer. It’s one of my most anticipated games, alongside other titles such as Grave Seasons. There’s no official release date, but this latest video gives us a glimpse into what we can expect.

Learn more about The Florist, and don’t forget to add the game to your wishlist via the game’s official Steam page.

Taking Inspiration to Create Something Unique

Firstly, I’ll address the elephant in the room. The Florist is a survival horror, and yes, it does seem reminiscent of Resident Evil. However, it’s 100% its own thing. No matter how unique a game is, there are always going to be people being negative, comparing new titles to well-known ones, and completely writing them off. The one thing I have to say to that is: you’re missing out.

Does it matter if it looks like it plays like Resident Evil? No. There are plenty of other games that have similar mechanics, and they aren’t hindered by it. As a Resident Evil fan and a survival horror fan in general, I’m happy when I see new games take those core elements and turn them into something new. There’s no harm in being inspired by the greats. That’s exactly what The Florist does.

Botanical Horror

It combines survival horror with botanical horror. I’ve actually really been into the botanical horror subgenre recently, with it mainly starting when I read Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G Drews, one of my current favourite authors.

Sometimes, nature is terrifying. The subgenre twists plants and fungi into something far more dangerous than we can comprehend. As Silent Hill F was advertised, ‘Find Beauty in Terror‘. A lush forest is beautiful, but what if it were something parasitic and evil?

What is The Florist About?

You play as Jessica Park, visiting the scenic Joycliffe to deliver a flower arrangement. Suddenly, the town is overrun by plants and flora. It kills residents and visitors alike, turning them into horrifying botanical terrors.

As you progress, Joycliffe descends further into terror. It’s a bit like Silent Hill F in that sense. If you haven’t played that game, which I recommend you do, the town becomes more and more overrun by spider lilies. It’s beautiful, but then you remember the horrors Hinako has gone through.

In survival horror fashion, you have to counter these monsters while solving puzzles. You unveil more of the mystery the further you get. With fixed cameras adding a nostalgic feel, they emphasise the gorgeous visuals. Don’t get too distracted by the lovely flora, though; it’s out to get you.
