Farming with a bit of nightmare. That’s what Besmirch offers. Well, you might call it Stardew Valley of a kind, probably a scary one with taxes, religious paranoia, demons, and wolves. And there’s also an extremely weird rabbit nobody is supposed to find!
Besmirch comes from Gangru Games with publishing by 2 Left Thumbs. It launched into Early Access on Steam for PC, currently selling for $9.99. There’s also a 20% launch discount happening for two weeks.
The Early Access version lets players go through a full annual cycle, but only Autumn and Winter actually have the full active storyline. Summer and Spring are technically playable too, just unfinished.
Besmirch is pretty grim right from the start
The town of Besmirch is starving to death, the land’s dying, and everyone’s suspicious of each other. The Baron running the place is squeezing people dry with heavier and heavier tithes.
You show up as the newest farmhand hired to keep the collapsing little town alive. Meanwhile, nightmare creatures roam around outside every night.
During the day, you’re trying to force crops out of cursed, dead soil, cooking whatever scraps you can manage. You can choose to feed the starving town or hoard supplies for yourself.
Every seed is a struggle, and every harvest matters. You also still have to hand over the Baron’s share because even apocalypses don’t stop taxes.
At night, the whole Besmirch changes completely. The game keeps warning you that demons wake up after dark, so you have to rush back home before midnight and lock your doors. If you stay out too late, you can get murdered by wolves.
The town has shops, NPCs, armour and weapons for customising your character, furniture and decorations for your house, caves, and dungeons. There are explorable locations, too. It includes the Baron’s haunted mansion, a Sewer Dungeon, a Mansion Dungeon, and four separate caves.
