You might’ve already read our Mulberry County walkthrough where we tackle how to complete the game, but that’s really only half the story. This analogue horror game comes with some rather fascinating lore and its own horrible monsters in the form of the Mulberry County Fallen Angels. This isn’t a straight up guide, and is more a collection of the lore relating to these creature that we can gather through the game itself. The info is scattered all over the place, so take this as a repository of lore you can use without having to hunt around in-game.

What Are The Fallen Angels Of Mulberry County?

From what we’ve observed through playing Mulberry County, there are a few things we know about these monsters that stalk the woods.

Spoiler Alert

This article contains spoilers for Mulberry County Volume 1, and potentially the Secret Tape. Please don’t read any further if you want to play through yourself and get the endings first-hand!

The Intro Announcement

Mulberry County starts with an emergency broadcast, and public service announcement relating to a state of emergency triggered by the appearance of these ‘Fallen Angels’.

“The state has issued an Emergency Broadcast for the Mulberry County region and neighboring counties.

Good Afternoon.
On Friday July 18th, the Mulberry County Police Department received a call from David Brown who reported strange noises coming from his backyard at 2:37am Mountain Standard Time. Upon arrival, police encountered a large pale creature, approximately 8 feet tall, showing signs of extreme visual and auditory sensitivity. Before the creature fled into the woods, officer Terry Smith was able to capture a photograph of the creature which we will now show on your screen now.

We strongly advise all residents of Mulberry County and her surrounding areas to lock your doors and secure your homes. At 8:00pm state-wide curfew is in effect until further notice.

Please note, that this creature is not alone and under no circumstances should you attempt to approach these creatures which experts are now calling, fallen angels.”

Fallen Angel Traits

While the depictions aren’t exactly the same, all our glimpses of Fallen Angels in-game have a similar set of traits.

Roughly humanoid in shape, with elongated limbs, often an unnatural posture. In Chapter 2 the one you glimpse in the house seems to crawl along the ground on all-fours.Large, the intro transcript described them as 8ft tall. Some look kind of… raw steak textured. Others, like the ones in the dream sequence, appear to have some kind of skin… but it is a dream sequence, so make of that what you will. The one in the intro is also described as a ‘large, pale creature’.

While they’re pretty physically imposing, they’ve also demonstrated the capacity to use trickery on potential victims, and might even have some ability to disguise themselves, or possess people. When Henry checks the door in Chapter 2, he sees what appears to be an old man asking to use the phone. When denied, he appears to start choking, then his body appears to split open and extend into the monstrous shape of a Fallen Angel. Whether this is some kind of parasitic control, or a chameleon-like disguise, (if chameleons could look like sinister old men asking to enter your house at night) it’s not clear from the in-game observations.

Another thing we run into in game unique to Fallen Angels, is something called ‘Spine Columns’. The description reads:

Spine Columns

Large Pillars of bone and organic matter are strong indicators of nearby humanoids. It is believed that they serve as a disposal point for bodies they no longer need.

The phrase ‘no longer need’ seems to imply that bodies are being used for something, so it may be that the parasite theory is true.

The final major thing we’ve noticed, which might be the reason for the creature name, is that they appear to be repelled by praying. At the end of Volume 1, Henry begins to pray as he’s attacked by the entity that’s been stalking the house. This appears to cause it to flee in a hurry. They really need to tell everybody in Mulberry County about that.

The Fallen Angel’s Motivations

The motivations behind the Fallen Angel that appears to target Henry in Volume One isn’t completely clear, but one thing that’s quite clear is that it probably wants to cancel his life subscription, and seems to be having fun doing so. The Angel appears to delight in toying with its victim. The entity breaks a window. It appears at the door pretending to be a person asking to come in. It lures him outside into the woods and then slips inside his house. Just so happens that Henry, bless him, is a bit oblivious and more than willing to shrug off what would be psychological torment to most people.

At the end of Volume One, the Angel finally decides to move in for the kill, where it corners Henry in the bathroom closet. (We just cannot get that minigame to work out.) It’s distracted by the car lights, possibly either not eager to be interrupted… or possibly seeing Henry’s older brother as a more appealing target. It seems like it likes to be alone when it goes in for the kill, at it later tried to corner Henry in the cornfield.

Of course, if we want to look at how this thing behaves towards Henry, we also need to look at….

Henry’s Connection

If you reached the wild dream sequence at the end of Chapter 3, you might realize that Henry Miller, our protag with questionable judgement, might have more ties to the Fallen Angels than you’d necessarily expect. Henry’s Camping Trip slideshow seems to imply that his parents, who supposedly left in a hurry before the events of Volume 1, were perhaps tracking Fallen Angels. If we’re reading the events of some of the videos properly, they had equipment that they seemed to be using to track their approach, and documenting their sightings, perhaps like the ‘prisoners’ detailed in the VHS.

Assuming this is all true and is a flashback, rather than a dream, it would mean that Henry has has run-ins with the Fallen Angels in the past, and that his parents are not only aware of them, but actively trying to track them down. Maybe we’ll see more of the Millers, and find out where Henry’s parents left in such a hurry for. Where they heading towards something, or away from it? If they were running, why leave Henry behind? Did that classified folder just fall out of the passing car, or did someone throw it out there in hopes Henry would find it? There are so many questions we still want answered.
