It’s back in a new avatar. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake has launched on Windows PC through Steam. Koei Tecmo America and developer Team Ninja have teamed up to bring the old ghost story back.
Originally developed by Tecmo, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is a survival horror video game that dropped for PlayStation 2. The second entry in the Fatal Frame series, it was released in Japan and North America in 2003, and in Europe in 2004.
Fatal Frame Is Also Known As Project Zero
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake has been rebuilt almost completely, including graphics, audio, gameplay systems, and controls. The title follows twin sisters who somehow end up lost inside an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits.
Their only reliable defense is the Camera Obscura, a strange device capable of capturing and sealing away supernatural entities. Now, this mechanic has been upgraded heavily in the remake. You can now make use of features like Focus, Zoom, and Filter Switching.
Filters add different effects that can change how battles play out or help uncover hidden details while exploring. There’s the Paraceptual Filter that unlocks a Special Shot called Blinding, and there’s the Radiant Filter, which enables the Special Shot Purging.
Another addition is the Holding Hands with Mayu mechanic. This one focuses on the relationship between the sisters and tries to make that emotional connection more noticeable during the story.
And, of course, there’s a massive visual overhaul. Character textures, including skin and clothing, have been reworked with much greater detail. The haunted Minakami Village has been recreated carefully, with attention paid to lighting and shadows that emphasise its unsettling atmosphere.
To go with all of it, the developers also added 3D sound. It makes the presence of spirits feel closer and more immediate while exploring the village. If you’re interested, you can grab Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake from Steam for $49.99.
