A new game unlike anything we’ve seen has just landed on iOS, and it actually uses AI in a way that’s actually exciting and creative. No, really!

Developed by indie studio BrainWyrm, the Ridl-E: The AI Riddle Bot app has you creating personalised location-based puzzles in your very own backyard. Or living room. Or park. It really is completely up to you.

Tell Me More

Using AI-powered technology, the app asks you to take a picture or record a video of any object you see around you.

Ridl-E then takes that item and creates specific riddles based around it. You then pass the phone to your opponent to see if they can solve the puzzle and find that same object before the time runs out.

So a can of deodorant could come up with the clue “in a can that’s fresh and bold, a scent of sunset to behold.” We say could, but that’s literally what the app came up with for us with the first thing we found on our desk. Yes, we’re lazy.

And even more obscure items can be made into clues, with text on items being read to create some very testing teasers.

Fun For All Ages

It’s a basic concept, but one we’ve never seen executed as well as it is here. It allows you to create a fun and unique scavenger hunt anywhere, anytime. We found it easy to use, as did anyone we let try it, be they young or old.

It’s endlessly entertaining for small children to seek out the answer by rifling through their rooms, but depending on the item the app can offer a true test for even experienced puzzle solvers as well.

There are options to play with friends in the same room in Party mode, but you can also venture online in World mode. Here you can create riddles for other players around the world to track down, or go and find some yourself and see if you can solve the puzzles others have left in certain zones.

Inspirations

Developer Michael Hein says he was inspired by Bilbo’s ‘Riddles in the Dark’ encounter with Gollum in The Hobbit to make Ridl-E, but also the act of geocaching. That shines through with the endless riddles the app can produce, as well as how it encourages players to explore the world around them.

“As a father of two boys, I’m always looking for fun, stimulating, kinetic games to play with the family. Being able to pull out my phone and create a riddle scavenger hunt in seconds during moments of downtime is quite the superpower” Hein told us.

So if you’d like to check out Ridl-E: The AI Riddle Bot there’s nothing stopping you – as it’s free to download on the App Store right now. There are also the game’s official YouTube, X, Bluesky, TikTok, and Instagram channels to check out.
