Hey, I’m a super fan of Silent Hill, and I’m delving into the Resident Evil franchise for the first time. While two completely different game series, my fears of survival horror are finally being whittled away.

I’m definitely more of an atmospheric and psychological horror fan, rather than jumpscares and all-out action, but I’m not averse to the latter. Welcome to my quest to catch up with RE so I can play Resident Evil Requiem.

I’m Officially a Resident Evil Fan Now

With the release of Resident Evil Requiem (RE9), I decided it’s finally time for me to delve into the series. I’ve always been a fan of horror games and the horror genre as a whole, especially movies.

However, sometimes I’d struggle to get into survival horror titles due to the stress of resource management and… well, the survival aspect.

I took it upon myself to enter the world of Silent Hill, and in doing so, I realised I could actually handle the survival-horror experience – a huge accomplishment for me.

Plus, it’s no secret that Resident Evil has left such an impression on pop culture over the years, in both the gaming and horror spheres.

My First Failed Attempt

A couple of years back, I treated myself to both the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes. Loading up RE2, I was enjoying myself until I ran out of bullets in the middle of a hallway with two approaching zombies.

It was then that I admittedly gave up and quit the game, promising to pick it up again when I wasn’t as tired. That didn’t happen.

As the hype continued for Resident Evil Requiem, I had this voice in the back of my head telling me to pick up where I left off in RE2. So, that’s what I did.

Last week, I booted up the remake on my PlayStation 5, ready to get over my apprehension. After all, I got through Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, and F just fine, making it one of my favourite franchises. Surely I can handle Resident Evil now?

A New Beginning

I restarted Resident Evil 2 from the beginning and selected Leon’s story. Even without playing the games, I appreciate Leon as a character with all the content I’ve seen of him over the years.

When I was younger, I actually played Resident Evil 6, which I know is a controversial game. But as a young teenager, I really enjoyed it. Will I think the same now if I replay it? Possibly.

Obviously, if you’re familiar with Resident Evil, you’ll know RE2 is where Leon is first introduced. A fresh-faced newbie at R.P.D., he’s brave but not hardened just yet. He’s as optimistic as you can be, given the situation.

Fast forward to RE4 (which I haven’t played yet, but watched a lot of content of), he’s certainly a lot more sassy and battle-hardened compared to his newbie status. Fast forward even further to RE9, and Leon Kennedy is now a gruff silver fox.

The Quest For Leon Content

From what I’ve seen of Requiem, it’s probably going to be the game that scares me the most, bar Resident Evil 7. My plan at the moment is to get through the games featuring the main cast of Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine.

Yes, I’m going to play RE6, too. This will then lead nicely to RE9, so I can stop getting FOMO. I’ve watched multiple playthroughs of both RE7 (Biohazard) and RE8 (Village), but I’ll probably pick those up afterwards.

It’s been a franchise I’ve always wanted to get into, and I knew I’d love it. I enjoy RE content, whether it’s a YouTube video essay, a playthrough, or fan edits on social media. But with no experience in the game myself, I was always missing something. Now that I’m brave enough to play it, and I’ve completed RE2, I get the hype.

I’m the most excited for RE4, though I’m torn between playing the original or the remake first. Either way, I’ll end up playing both. But I’ve got a whole game between now and then, and a date with Jill Valentine.

Maybe I’ll report back when I’ve finished RE3 and RE4, too.
