PS Plus Extra and Premium users are warned not to download a new free game in the catalog to avoid facing game license issues. Red Dead Redemption’s PS5 port launched today and is available on the service day one. However, those who own the PS4 copy — either digitally or physically on disc — need to make sure they aren’t locking themselves out of the free PS5 upgrade that they’re entitled to.

RDR PS4 owners shouldn’t download free PS5 upgrade from PS Plus catalog

To reiterate, both the physical and digital edition owners of RDR PS4 are entitled to the free PS5 upgrade. If you have the game on disc, make sure it’s popped into your disc drive.

This morning, I saw reports from players in various regions that they were unable to claim the free upgrade from the PS Store and opted to download the PS5 copy from PS Plus Extra catalog instead.

I can’t stress this enough: please don’t do this! Sony has a long-running licensing issue that hasn’t been fixed since the PS Plus revamp. If you download the PS5 version of RDR from the catalog, there is a chance you’ll be permanently locked out of claiming a free PS5 upgrade. This PS Plus version isn’t yours to keep forever.

To download your free PS5 upgrade the right way, make sure to navigate to the PS Store game page via your PS5 console. Once claimed, the proper version should appear in your library, and that’s the one you should download.
