“I’ll never stop asking myself who I really am?” Grasshopper Film has revealed the first official US trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled I’m Not Everything I Want to Be, made by Czech filmmaker Klára Tasovská. This premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival nearly two years ago, and played at tons of festivals last year including at Karlovy Vary, CPH:DOX, NewFest, & Viennale. It’s a truly remarkable biopic film about the life of a photographer woman who grew up in Soviet-era Czechoslovkia, escaping the regime and their control through her camera – eventually making her way to Berlin and Tokyo before returning to her home in Prague. Using only photographs & diary entries she reads out herself, the artist – together with the filmmaker – intimately relates her search for identity, everyday struggles, physicality, relationships, and real emotions. Beginning the story in Soviet-occupied Prague, a young female photographer named Libuše Jarcovjáková embraces wild nights of rebellion, desire, and resistance to conformity. I’m Not Everything I Want to Be traces her 20-year quest for freedom and self-acceptance. I’m quoted in this trailer because this doc film really is superb – I was deeply moved by it and how much it covers simply through her photographs and the stories she tells. A strong recommendation from me – it’s also Czechia’s Oscar submission this year. // Continue Reading ›
