“Data is their food. You are the harvest.” Welcome to Earth 2.0! Prime Video has unveiled the full trailer for a new screenlife found footage version of War of the Worlds, directed by Rich Lee. In this new take – Ice Cube fights aliens to save his family and the world. An experiment in adapting this sci-fi classic story of alien ships hidden underneath the earth, this time commenting on surveillance and data, using only footage of screen videos to show what it would be like for someone watching from afar. An interesting concept, but it just looks like a gigantic, boring digital mess. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov, one of the few remaining “screenlife cinema” supporters, this new version will be steaming on Prime Video next week. A grounded sci-fi film in the vein of District 9, that touches on themes of privacy versus surveillance. Starring Ice Cube along with Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, Henry Hunter Hall, Iman Benson, Devon Bostick, and Michael O’Neill. Alas this looks like it won’t be that much fun to watch, even with Ice Cube yelling at the screen.
