Little Nemo and the Guardians of Slumberland has officially launched on Steam. Developed primarily by Dave Mauro and published by Die Soft, the 2D indie Metroidvania project kickstarted in 2022. A Steam demo was launched in June 2023.
Heavily inspired by Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo comics, the title drops players into Slumberland, a colourful dream world. At launch, you can grab the game from Steam at a 10% discount on the full price of $19.99. The discount is available until April 7th, 2026. A Nintendo Switch version will also arrive later this year.
Little Nemo and the Guardians of Slumberland is fully hand-animated frame by frame
Slumberland used to be peaceful, but is now under threat from a mysterious force called the Oblivion. You need to stop it from consuming everything in the world. You explore the world, become stronger by collecting toys and abilities, and meet different characters.
The gameplay takes inspiration from retro NES-era platformers, especially the older Capcom and Nintendo titles. But unlike them, this title takes place in a large, non-linear world. The game also features a full original soundtrack composed by Peter Berkman, the lead guitarist and songwriter of the American pop rock band Anamanaguchi.

The full version of the game includes several distinct domains to explore, with different inhabitants, visual themes, enemies, and secrets. Zones include Dreamswept Plains, Gumdrop Gardens, Mushroom Marsh, Nightlight City, Crystal Caverns, and Haunted Hollow.
Throughout the game, Nemo collects ability-granting toys that help with combat, traversal, and puzzle solving. You get toys like the Yo-Yo, Grapple Yo-Yo, Bubble Wand, Pogo Stick, Monster Claw, and Cape.
Another major mechanic involves Nemo’s pyjamas. Different PJs change Nemo’s appearance and also empower toys and abilities in different ways. The game also includes companions called Little Buddies. When Nemo goes back to sleep, the buddy you choose will come to life in Slumberland and provide a passive ability to help during the adventure.
