NUTMEG is a retro football management card game that launched on Steam today. The game leans heavily into nostalgia, mixing classic football management with deckbuilding. Set across the 1980s and 1990s, back when tackles were rough, and mullets were everywhere!

NUTMEG comes from developers Sumo Digital, Sumo Digital Academy, and Sumo Sheffield. On Steam, it’s published by Secret Mode. The title costs $24.99, but there’s a 40% discount available during the first week of launch. The game is also fully playable on Steam Deck.

NUTMEG is full of flavours just like the spice!

You take charge of a classic football team and go through a 20-year journey moving up and down the English football Divisions across the 1980s and 1990s. Matches play out through a fast-paced card system. You pick line-ups, choose formations, and battle the opposition with three points always on the line.

Cards are a big part of the game, and getting cards is always helpful. You earn card packs by completing challenges, then combine cards to improve your deck and give yourself an advantage during matches.

You can refine strategies like route one football, tiki taka, or counter-attacking. They can earn extra card packs and improve your chances when matchday arrives. On that note, watch the launch trailer of NUTMEG here.

The game also includes full club management features. You pick your club, handle transfers, scout and develop youth players, and fight for promotion across four Divisions. You also manage finances, deal with the press, and hire or fire backroom staff.

There’s more to it than football

The publishers have partnered with the Joey Beauchamp Foundation and the Dalian Atkinson Legacy Trust as official charity partners. £0.05 from every sale will be donated to each charity.

JBF, named after the former Oxford United player, focuses on mental health support and awareness in the Oxfordshire community. Meanwhile, DALT, created by the family of the former Aston Villa player, encourages young people to participate in sports to support their growth and well-being.
