The Tower Defense genre contains some of the most strategic games that test players’ capabilities to stop enemy waves by fortifying defenses, expanding forward, and utilizing resources. There are several ingenious tower defense games out there that will hook you with their creative mechanics and rewarding progression system. Speaking of creative game mechanics, Lasot Interactive, an indie developer, released a tower defense title called Rustic Defense. Initially, it looked similar to other titles in this genre, but it is not. This game includes roguelike elements, adding randomness of every kind to keep the tension high in every match. This is our review of Rustic Defense, a tower defense game with roguelike elements.

The developers provided the review copy of Rustic Defense.

World and Setting

Rustic Defense is built around a rustic fantasy world under siege, requiring you to defend a base from enemy waves. There are different maps in the game, including forests, valleys, rustic villages, etc. Each map offers different paths and layouts. Moreover, every time a match takes place on a procedurally generated hex map, the map’s layout is random. This mechanic is what makes Rustic Defense unique from other tower defense games. You cannot actively pre-strategize a match to get a strong start. You must expand and increase defenses as the match progresses to defeat the enemy waves.

Gameplay

The core gameplay of Rustic Defense revolves around building towers, eliminating enemy waves, gathering resources, and upgrading. At first, it looks similar to every tower defense game, but the roguelike progression system is what makes the gameplay adaptive. As mentioned above, the pre-strategizing technique does not work effectively in Rustic Defense.

At the start of the match, a small area will be visible; the rest will be covered in fog. You will have access to two weapons at the start and a little bit of money. Use the money to start placing weapons near your base and on the map. As the fog starts to disappear, the enemy waves will start marching to your home base along the path. Your weapons will start shooting at the enemies automatically. In addition to eliminating enemies, you must also consider gathering gold at the gold mines. As you get more gold, you will be able to place more weapons and have more control.

The enemies will be easy to defeat in the early waves, but become stronger as you clear more and more waves. Around waves 13, 24, and 33, you will face enemy bosses. These have a lot of health and deal way more damage than regular enemies. It is best to relocate your weapons near the base to deal a ton of damage to the boss at once. Moreover, using the elemental weapons is key to winning the boss fights.

After every match, you earn XP depending on the number of waves you have cleared. You can then use the XP in the skill shop to unlock numerous passive and active skills. These skills will increase the damage of weapons, reduce the cooldown of weapons, and even unlock variations of weapons.

Sound & Visuals

The visuals of Rustic Defense might not be up to par with recent graphics technology, but the simplistic presentation of a hex world is perfect for a tower defense game. It makes the map easy to read, which is essential in a strategy game. The hex world design is clean and provides a clear response to projectiles and explosions.

The sound design of Rustic Defense is very good, having well-balanced audio effects for the environment, tower fire, and impacts. Moreover, the soundtrack is very subtle, which works well with the momentum of the game. Overall, the sound design greatly helps with the immersion.

Verdict – Score 8/10

Rustic Defense is a great Tower Defense video game that offers a unique adaptive gameplay experience for its players. The roguelike elements make every match different from the last, requiring players to constantly adapt their strategy. However, the early pacing and flow of every match are slow, so it takes a bit of time to adjust. Moreover, it has a steep learning curve, which again takes a lot of time to adjust to. If you are someone who enjoys tower defense titles, then you will love Rustic Defense. It offers great replayability and real-time strategizing.

Rustic Defense is available on PC (Steam).
