What Is Love and Deepspace To You? – We Asked Players at The Love and Deepspace Anniversary Event in New York

Last week, Sho and I had the surreal pleasure of flying to New York to attend With Him in Deepspace, the Love and Deepspace 2nd Anniversary Event. And we weren’t alone. Love and Deepspace has more than 80 million players, and a hefty number of them were right there with us, eager to worship at the altar of Papergamer’s blockbuster otome RPG.

Braving the freezing temperatures of New York in January to line up outside the event, these fans had plenty to say about the game, their favorite updates, their Love and Deepspace origin stories, how long they had been waiting in line, and how cold it was.

How long have you been in line?

About 11 minutes.

That’s not bad, the queue is really long, you’re brave for staying! I want to ask you today, why do you like Love and Deepspace? 

I used to play a lot of otome games back then, and I was kind of upset when they started making it more monetized for chapters. So, then my sister started playing, and I was kind of hesitant. But then she told me how it’s like gacha for the Memories, so I was like, ‘Oh! You keep it?’, and I actually kind of like that. And you could get lucky, as you could get Diamonds for free, so I said I’ll try it.

How long have you been playing Love and Deepspace? 

Like, February? I think right on Valentine’s Day last year.

That’s perfect!

It was kind of awkward… as I didn’t know the banners were limited, cause I wanted to get the cat banner. And then I joined and I get that banner.

That’s been a big topic of today… the cat banner. Speaking of banners, what’s your favourite update?

The Rafayel Sea God update. I got a little too crazy. I saved almost three hundred while collecting and unlocking everything. And then he came and I was like, ‘I don’t need to ring it up’. And then one minute later, I have the Sea God and regretted it, but now he’s OP.

That’s true! So, is Rafayel also your bias? Or would you like to share who it is?

I joined the game because of Sylus, and I did like that kind of trope, where they’re really devoted. But then, you know the free chapters they give you at the beginning with Rafayel? I really liked that. I was like, ‘Oh, this guy is silly!’

He’s so silly and whimsical. He has a lot of charisma. So would you say it’s both?

Yeah! It’s tied, and the more I played… Well, those two are tied, then it’s Xavier, Zayne, then Caleb.

It’s really hard to tier list them because you don’t want to put anyone at the bottom because you like them so much.

The thing is that Caleb will do things that I do… and I didn’t like that. I was like, ‘This is a little too on the nose. It feels like I’m talking to myself’. I’m a big sister, and I’m pretty overprotective, and he’s her favourite, so it gets pretty funny to tease her with it.

Zayne, Caleb, and Sylus Lovers!

This interview was with two people together, so I’ve used numbers to show which person answered.

How long have you guys been in line?

1 – Since about twelve thirty.

2 – Yeah, so probably close to an hour?

I think it’s moved quite quick, I don’t know if you’ve seen how long it is, it’s all the way down the street, it’s crazy! 

2 – Yeah, I think it’s kind of quicker than we expected. But I also think it’s a bit quicker because we were cold.

Yeah, at least you’re all huddled together, and you’ve come in a group so you can do that. So, what is your favourite update?

2 – I would say probably either this one, the most recent one, as we have our own place to go to, which I thought was pretty cool.

It’s a really cool, huge content update. It’s really, really good. So obviously you guys have been waiting in line for quite a while, and you clearly have adoration for the updates and everything that the team has been working on… Why do you love Love and Deepspace? What brings you back to this game?

1 – It’s so interactive, and there’s always so much to do in the game. I can always find myself doing different things whether it’s playing the battles, or doing the quality time and looking at the different stories. And especially now with the new home system, there’s just always so much to do. It’s just really lovely and it’s such a fun game. It feels so real!

My final question is bias, but I don’t actually know if I need to ask you! (Context – she was holding a Zayne plushie!)

2 – Mine would be Sylus and Caleb. I feel like they’re both half and half, being a childhood friend and ‘mafia’, so I’m just really interested.
