New PS5 slim consoles do not require an internet connection to pair disc drive

According to X (formerly Twitter) user @Modyfikator89, they claim the new CFI-2116 PS5 Slim model, which includes a disc drive, does not require an internet connection to pair the disc drive. They provided video of them setting up the brand-new console, which shows that they did not need to pair the disc drive during the process.

There are a few more details @Modyfikator89 provided regarding the new PS5 console. This particular model is currently available in stores and has factory firmware 11.40 installed out of the box. It also seems that the disc drive is now factory-paired.

For context, PS5 models before this did require players to have an internet connection to pair the disc drive.

Although this is good news for new PS5 owners, there seems to be a caveat. According to X user @DoesItPlay1, while the new consoles retain the disc drive pairing after a factory reset, they reportedly lose that capability after updating the firmware. They do say that they’re “trying to find out more,” so this isn’t 100% confirmed just yet.

Gamers looking to grab a new PS5 are in luck. Sony currently has a sale on PlayStation Direct where customers can save on consoles, and actually bring prices down below the prices of consoles pre-price hike. PS5 Pros are $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition Consoles are $399, and standard PS5s are $449.

This also includes the limited edition Ghost of Yotei PS5s in either the black or gold colorway, which includes the critically acclaimed Sucker Punch sequel. Both of these are priced at $499. All of these console deals will end on December 25 at 2:59 a.m. ET.
