Gamezebo Interviews GungHo Online Entertainment at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 about their latest game, Let It Die: Inferno. Their booth was set up and ready to go, with players even experiencing electric shocks when playing! Shocks aside, we’re here to give an insight into GungHo’s game development process and what they value the most. Even better? The iconic Uncle Death, the main mascot for the game franchise, was there himself.
What are you most excited to showcase at TGS this year?
Uncle Death. He embodies a major part of the game and plays a huge part, so he’s one of the most exciting and important things we want to showcase and have people remember. As long as you remember him, that’s what matters.
Why is humour so important to you in your games?
Look at Uncle Death and how he’s dressed! You probably can’t tell, but he’s sweating under that mask as it’s so hot. But even though he’s sweating, he’s still wearing it for humour and to represent our game ideas for amusement. At this point, we’re trying our best to make you laugh, too. That feeling of humour is what we want to convey to our audiences and users worldwide as well. Our number one goal is to make games that we find funny. If we don’t find humour in it, then there’s no point in making it.
In the afternoon, we’re busy making and planning games. But at night, we do Manzai, which is a traditional style of Japanese comedy. We’re the comedy duo called the Etiquette Boys. We’d like this to be another full-time second job.
If you weren’t making games or doing comedy, what would you be doing?
As you’ve taken away my two main things in life… sleeping it is!
Do you have a favourite project you’ve worked on?
The ‘Let It Die’ series is my entire life and the best project I have ever worked on. Our newest game, Let It Die: Inferno, is the third in the series. With this project, I’ll be able to ascend to the heavens without any regrets in life.
Do global audiences respond differently to your games compared to Japanese audiences?
They are very different. The easiest way to explain is through YouTube comments. When we upload videos or trailers on YouTube, Japanese comments tend to be more negative if they don’t enjoy the game. However, comments from the US, for example, are more honest about what they do and don’t like.
Despite this, we focus on whether we like the game and are happy with it rather than whether specific countries or audiences like the game. The fact remains that we want to make funny and amusing games to make people laugh. In the future, if other things change, we won’t.
What’s the best thing about your role and career?
Our main job is to pray to make sure we can make a fun and amusing game for people to enjoy.
What can people look forward to in GungHo’s future?
We do have plans for upcoming projects, and we are currently thinking of ideas. However, there are plans in motion. Usually, we get the idea for a project and sleep on it. If we still like it by the next day, we start to plan and develop the game. We want to create and continue making games and projects for as long as we can.
Do you have a final message for fans?
Uncle Death’s glasses are there to hypnotise people to play the game!
We’d like to thank GungHo Online Entertainment for speaking to us and making us laugh throughout the interview, as well as giving us a taster for their newest title, Let It Die: Inferno. You can find out more about the title on the official Steam page.
