“I understand the need to find yourself, find your family… I simply said: Frances, this is your grandpa, Jim. But he thought grandpa sounded too old so he gave himself a new name: Jimpa.” Kismet down in Australia has unveiled the first official trailer for a lovely film about family called Jimpa, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It’s the newest film made by the Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde (following Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and has no US release set yet. Jimpa will have its Australian premiere as the Opening Night film at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival in October. Hannah and her non-binary teenager Frances visits her gay grandfather Jimpa living in Amsterdam. Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather for a year, challenging Hannah’s parenting beliefs and forcing her to confront past issues. Starring John Lithgow as Jimpa, Olivia Colman as Hannah, Aud Mason-Hyde as Frances, with Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Kate Box, and Daniel Henshall. “With warmth, humour and joy, Jimpa reminds us that, in every family, there are stories that don’t add up.” I’m very happy to be quoted in this trailer from my Sundance review. I still think it is a wonderfully warm, tender, worthwhile film… Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›
