“The smoldering chemistry is palpable…” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled Plainclothes, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Carmen Emmi. This premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival at the start of the year, where it won a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble Cast. It’s now set for a limited release starting in September. The title is a reference to “plainclothes police officers”, and the film is set in 1997 following a gay man who is tracked by a plainclothes cop inside a mall. “Everyone has a secret.” A promising undercover agent assigned to lure and arrest gay men defies his own orders when he falls in love with a target. Starring Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth, with Amy Forsyth, Christian Cooke, Maria Dizzia, and Gabe Fazio. The film features a clunky VHS style referencing the 90s, cutting back & forth between normal footage and grainy VHS tape full-frame footage.
