Palio is the second main chapter of Mafia: The Old Country. It begins automatically after the 1st chapter, Famiglia. In this guide, we will walk you through the Palio chapter, including gathering any collectibles available.
Chapter 2: Palio Walkthrough – Mafia: The Old Country
Ride with Luca to Pasquale
As the initial cutscene ends, get on the horse and follow Luca behind the cart. Ride the horse through the beautiful landscape of Sicily until you stop for a delivery to Pasquale. Get off the horse and pick up a crate from the back of the cart. Go to the main door to initiate a cutscene. After the cutscene, go and interact with the crate on the table. It will give you an introduction to Dinari, the main currency of the game, which you can use to purchase knives, weapons, charms, and other items.
Now, go to Pasquale’s store down the stairs to purchase a knife. Interact with the knife station in the store to purchase a knife.
NOTE: Pasquale’s Store will have a Mystery Fox, which you can purchase for 5,000 Dinari. You won’t be able to purchase it at this point, but you can visit the shop later in the story or in the free roam.
Practice a Duel with Luca
After purchasing the Knife, go back to Luca. It will initiate a practice duel session with him. The game will teach you all the mechanics of Knife Fighting. Perform the actions correctly throughout the practice session to learn the moves. Parrying is one of the best strategies to learn and master, as it can help you win duels easily. After the tutorial, you and Luca will have a one-on-one duel. Defeat Luca with everything you have learned to finish practicing.
Reach Palio with Luca
After practicing with Luca, leave Pasquale’s place and get back on your horse. Here, the game will give you an introduction to Horse Spur. You can use the Horse Spur Charges to ride the horse quickly. Use the spurs to ride to Palio with Luca.
Head to Torrisi Race Tent
After reaching Palio, you need to head to the Torrisi race tent to progress. However, before you go there, there are a couple of items you can pick up. Continue ahead towards the tent location, and you will come across an NPC standing on a platform. Go to the back of the platform, and you will find the “Fortunato” Bead (Charm). Now, look to the left of the tent and you will see a newspaper on the wooden board. Pick up the newspaper, “Floods in Europe” (collectible). Once done, interact with the tent to initiate a cutscene.
Win the Race
After the cutscene, you will substitute as a racer. You need to win the race for the Torrisi family. There will be nine racers in total, and you must come in first position. The race is for two laps around the Palio. Your horse will have three Spur charges, and you must use them strategically to outrun the other racers. Initially, use the three spurs straight away to get closer to the racers and get past 1 or 2 racers. From here, let the spurs recharge. It is better to use all three spur charges at a time. It will allow you to move faster for a longer period of time. Simply, repeat the process of using spurs to get to the first place before crossing the finish line in the second lap to win the race. As you win the race, a cutscene will start.
Walk with Isabella
After winning the race, you need to hand out the wine in celebration. Isabella will join you as well. Now, hand out the wine and walk with Isabella until she stops at a fountain. Listen to the conversation and then head to the door on the right. Interact with the door to initiate a cutscene. Here, you will run into L’Ombra, one of Spadaro’s men.
Defeat L’Ombra in a Duel
This will be your first duel fight against an enemy. L’Ombra uses simple attacks most of the time, which are easy to parry. If he is striking, time it right to parry and then advance with your attack. If you see an upcoming attack with a sparkling symbol on the knife, dodge away because you cannot block it or parry it. Rinse and repeat the process of parrying and advancing with an attack to deplete L’Ombra’s health. Once his health is zero, attack him to initiate a cutscene. Luca will break up the fight and the second chapter will conclude.
