The remakes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games always enlighten the mood, as they deliver the best skateboarding experience to both newcomers and veterans. Players who are familiar with the original Pro Skater games feel more love for the remakes as they get to witness the greatness of classic levels all over again. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remake ignited the overall love for the franchise again, and a lot of new players got to experience the smoothness of cool tricks like never before. This time, the remake is back with the other two classics, Pro Skater 3 and 4. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is a remake of Pro Skater 3 and Pro Skater 4, bringing the best of the two classics. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is developed by Iron Galaxy and published by Activision, and this is our review of it.
Gameplay
Keeping the original vibe of Pro Skater games, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is a third-person skateboarding video game. It tends to keep the overall feeling of a classic arcade game, where players are in control of every trick. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 includes all of the mechanics from previous games, bringing the best experience possible for both veteran and new players. Similar to Pro Skater 1 + 2, there are numerous modes to play in Pro Skater 3 + 4 in all the classic and new maps.
However, one thing that the veteran players will find odd is the removal of Career mode for THPS 4. There is a career mode for THPS 3, where you can play through various classic stages with goal-based challenges. For THPS 4, the career mode is a complete time-based challenge, where you have to complete as many challenges as possible in under two minutes.
For playing perspective and progressing in the game, it is similar to Pro Skater 1 + 2. You must complete objectives to unlock levels and progress through the game. You can perform various moves, including aerials, flips, lips, grinds, and manuals, to score points. Combining all of your moves in a sequence will help you score more points. Performing the moves successfully will fill up your special meter, which you can then utilize to perform special tricks. The special tricks are worth a great deal than regular tricks. However, falling off the skateboard will reset the points in a sequence, and the special meter will go empty.
Overall, the gameplay of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 does justice to maintaining core mechanics. It helps players get to understand the overall easy-to-learn controls and perform tricks like a pro skater. The level objectives, score challenges, and trick skateboarding, all of the systems feel great.
Visual and Sound
The sound design of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is immaculate, which makes you feel like in the park with every screech. What makes it more enjoyable is the shattering music with all the classic themes in your ears. There are a lot of great songs to enjoy and skate to. The visuals of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 are better than ever. It has support for 4K resolution, allowing players to enjoy skating and do tricks in better quality. The lighting and the overall textures of all maps feel enhanced. Animations feel much smoother, allowing players to rock more tricks confidently.
Verdict – Score 8/10
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is a great addition to the franchise for the fans to experience the ultimate skating with all sorts of tricks. It keeps all of the original mechanics of the series and lets players get comfortable with the learning procedure. Scoring high points, completing objectives, and passing challenges, all of it feels great. Moreover, the Online multiplayer mode of the game allows you to connect and compete with your friends, regardless of the platform. Skating together with your friends and vibing out in the parks surely creates a whole new vibe. Furthermore, creating custom parks in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is more immersive and fun due to new tools. However, if you are someone who likes to compete through the career mode, then THPS 4 might disappoint you a bit.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is now available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
