Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Review
One of my favourite things about Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is the fact that you can truly take the game at your own pace. This is a common theme in cosy games, but in this title, it really does stand by that notion.
You can opt to play solo or in multiplayer mode, which I think is a fantastic addition. It’s the perfect game to play with family and friends! In fact, at times, it felt a little like I was playing a cosy MMO due to all the classes and tasks, which is a plus.
From Combat to Collecting Resources
Whether you want to engage in the main storyline or you’d rather level up your Lives, how you spend your time in the game is completely up to you.
Now, I will say, there are points where you do need to continue in the main story to progress your Lives further. This is because there are areas that are locked behind the main quests, but it’s fun to unlock them and explore!
You can even choose which combat style you want, from being a Magician to a Paladin, or a Hunter to a Mercenary. If you’re not feeling a certain class, you can swap it out whenever you want. I went with Mercenary first, and then expanded to Magician to try out ranged combat.
There’s a wonderful sense of progression throughout all aspects of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Every little goal and achievement feels rewarding, whether it’s because you can purchase new gear, collect higher quality resources, or you reach the higher ranks of a Life, unlocking additional content.
Multi-layered Progression
The variety of Lives keeps the game feeling fresh at all times. Whether you want to go mining or you want to cook up some delicious dishes, the world is your oyster. There is an abundance of Lives to choose from, which you can switch between at any time you want. You can quickly swap from chopping down trees to taking part in the crafting minigame as a carpenter.
To level up each Life, you need to complete the corresponding tasks. Each time you complete them, you can visit the leader of the Life to see your progress.
As you go up the ranks, you earn more rewards! Some people may not be fans of the grindy nature of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, but it’s something that I really enjoy in games.
You also need to be mindful of which ores and trees you’re trying to hit, as opting for one that is a higher level than you can drain your Stamina. Managing your Stamina is an important factor with everything you do!
Progressing through the game eventually unlocks Buddies, which can provide a boost when you’re crafting or collecting a variety of resources. It creates a fun sense of teamwork and speeds things up a little.
An Adventure of Your Own Making
The character customisation is something that I was pleasantly surprised by, as it allows you to create the perfect character for you. While it isn’t the most in-depth customisation screen, it still offers a bunch of cool options.
There’s also the aspect of interior design. Once you unlock the Base Camp, you can start to decorate your own home! The Base Camp is a little like Animal Crossing, in the sense that you can invite characters to live on the island. You can also place decor and alter the terrain around the island, too.
The game had already offered a ton of content before I unlocked this feature, so I was astonished when I gained access to it. Just when I thought I’d seen the majority of the title’s features, there were more! Fantasy Life has something for everyone and feels like an expansive, multi-layered adventure.
